Message:
My 99 3.9 4x4 has used about six liters (quarts)in the last 6000km (3750 miles). There are no visible leaks and no puddles of oil.No blue smoke trail, but I can smell oil at the exaust.

I know I have to do a compression test ,but has any one seen this on their truck.

Could there be any other causes than bad rings/cylinders???

Sounds like the classic belly pan gasket being blown out. I lose
about a quart every 1000 miles. You can check for it a couple
ways, one is to take off your air hat and open your butterfly on
the TB and shine a light into the intake. If you see a shiny black
wet surface that's oil. You have to remove the intake to change
the gasket out. Hughes Engines sells a nice kit for replacing the
panel under the intake and new bolts for it and a gasket for $70

Normally if you have bad rings, valve seals, etc there will blue smoke like you said, so that more than likely is not the case but still perfrom a compression check just to double check. What you want to check is your belly pan gasket. This is a TSB for these engines and if the gasket is gone, it will exhibit excessive oil consumption. But do a compression check, and a smoke machine would help you determine if the belly pan is gone. you can take off the air hat on the throttle body and look down into the intake with a flash light (hold the throttle body wide open, if there is a bunch of oil at the bottom of the intake, you've either got a bad intake gasket or belly pan gaket.

I carried out the intake leak test per tsb 09-05-00, but it passed and showed no leak.

I do have heavy oil contamination in cylinder #5

Could this be a head gasket? or worse a cracked head.

Im really pissed I have changed the oil every 6000 km,and never missed a service check.

It can be the following, but you'll never tell until you take the head off...

Head gasket -- these things use fel-pro gaskets which are by far some or the best available for these things, but could still always crack. May also exhibit coolant loss if cracked anywhere near cooling ports

Not cracked head, but a cracked runner in the head allowing oil in, but never heard of unless you've done extensive porting and gone past the limits

Valve seal --- more than likely, because after using even syns and having only 80,000 miles on my engine the valve seals were all cracked and leaking on passenger side of engine, but not drivers

Intake gasket --- possible, because not exactly the best I've ever seen, very mushy material and tears and cracks very easily

worn out piston rings in that cylinder, due to oil consumption and carbon buildup may actually show higher compression when in fact rings are wore out and burning oil

Valve guides -- allowing valve to twist and making an opening for oil to flow straight through at valve seals

And if you get right down to it, bad spark plugs will cause oil burn due to not firing in that cylinder, which makes it to where the rings don't expand durring anytime the piston is going up and allows oil to flow right by the whole time the piston is really in any kind of motion at all

What kind of oil are you using???

Really can't tell you anything until like I said, you pull the head... Some times an oil analysis will show you things or rather possible causes to things like these...
