Would someone please tell me the positioning of the 'EGR passage' from the exhaust manifold to the EGR valve? I can't understand what route the exhaust takes to get to the EGR valve. The only external tube(s) on the exhaust manifold is/are the dual air injection tube(s). I understand it has to be some kind of an internal bore, but how/where does it run?

I have to clean this passage out, as the EGR valve was down for a considerable amount of time and it has caused a carbon clog. The clog, in turn, I believe was responsible for a failed smog (high NOx).

This rig is a '91 Dodge Dakota V6 3.9.

I just had to clean this myself (I still failed now i have to check the o2 and the cat) the passage on my 90 3.9 goes from two holes in the throtle body opening on the top of the manifold down to where the egr bolts. I used a coat hanger and drill to boar it out along with some degreaser. If you have a place that can boil it for you I would do that. I also recomend at least checking the o2 sensor if not replace it.

I just failed again yesterday. I too suspect my cat because it failed on the HC at 15 and 25 mph.

What were your readings and in what state?

Emission testing, what a pain. I live in the St. Louis area and its required every other year. When I bought my '91 Dakota last year, the deal was it would pass emissions and safety inspection first, which it did (eventually). However, it failed the original emission test (I don't know if it was HC of NOx), the guy put new plug wires on it and a new cat and it passed w/ flying colors. When was the last time it had a tune-up (plugs, cap and rotor, wires)? What are your emission units? Ours are grams per mile for CO, NOx, and HC. Any codes popping up? If its the original cat, probabally is bad. Was it good and warmed up when you took the test, it helps if it is. Any vacuum hose leaks? Gas milage getting worse (sign of bad O2 sensor)?

Fill up with premium !
Also you might have a look in your local
auto-parts store ( NAPA , Pep-boys )
for an additive ( to fuel )
should have a money back , or more guarantee
to make vehicle pass inspection..
It actually works ....

I was high on the NOx and the HC both at 15mph and 25mph. I've got new plugs, wires etc. I was having a bit of blowby (from worn valve guide seals) and I'm guessing it coated and ruined the catcon.
