First of all, this is not to ruffle any feathers, but I was wondering what made you decide on a V6 over the 318-360? Gas mileage, overall vehicle price, or something else. Just thought I would ask.

I bought the v6 cause i thought it would get better gas mileage, boy was i wrong, the v8 gets better mileage from what i hear. Learn from our mistakes i guess, well, it was cheaper too.

Got my 99 V6 Sport for $12,000 off the show room floor. I think i got a good deal. Bought it in Feb of 1999 with under 40miles on it.

Gas mileage is a problem, but it has been a really reliable truck. I'd like more power, but the way it rides and how quiet it still is... me likey

Just need matching axle ratio for
size of engine .
3.55 or 3.91 for the six
3.91 good for pulling and hills

Shouldn't ruffle any feathers... my dak was my first truck. Insurance was higher for a V8 and my dad figured a V6 would be capable of getting me in enough trouble, let alone a V8. If I was truck shopping all over again, even though the V8's get worse mileage, I think I'd prolly get one instead.

I'm 23, my first car in highschool was a 95 dodge avenger, and yes mommy and daddy bought it for me. When I graduated college last year, I needed a new vehicle since the avenger died on me, and I always loved the dakota's. Now in a perfect world I would have gotten a 4x4 V8, but it was the first time a bought a car on my own. The first dealership I went to I found a 00' rc RT with just 20,000 miles on it, that was absolutely beautiful, I took it out for a test drive and wanted it right away, but when I got back I got the bad news, there was already someone there looking at it, and when I drove off, he said he wanted it. So it was off to the next dealership. Here I found a nice 02' cc SLT with 40,000 miles on it, and of course it was 2wd with the 3.9. I bought it and it is a great truck, but man I wish I could have gotten the RT, not only for the V8, but also because it was about $4000 cheaper. Sorry for such a long post, but that is my story.

I bought my dak of my parents when I was in high school. it had fallen into disuse, after my dad got a company furnished ride. I took over the payments, and gave them an extra 1000 for it (i ended up paying around 4800 for a 98 rc v6 2wd with only 37,000 on the clock in 2002) what a deal!! its not as bad as the v8 guys might think, its a lighter engine and any weight reduction is a plus!! my v6 does alright, but i have the 3:55 axle ratio. so that holds back the accelleration a lil bit.
i cant imagine having a cc v6 (esp a 4x4 cc v6) that would prolly be a dog...

I wont lie though, my next dak will be a loaded 4X4 v8 cc! i just dont see the need to take on more bills, when i have an excellent running truck now....

Well this is my first truck and insurance would have been higher for the v8 it is already 125 a month for the v6. Mine is a CC and It has alot more power than I though it would have for such a heavy truck and a little motor. But of course I am doing a lot of mods to it.

well this isn't my first truck, my dad let me use his 86 mazda B200 for my junior year, and that truck was great(being the first one its always great) and then a 92 dakota came into the junkyard I was working in, I loved as soon as it came in on the wrecker and loved the dakota ever since. But there was alot of stuff wrong with it so I didn't get it. then my mom got a backed child support check of 9g's. so they told me I was getting a new truck(the mazda wasn't doing so good) we searched around ran into a white 97 4x4 v8 excab. beautiful. but no credit. then when all hope was lost. saw and add in the paper "2000 blk dakota 110000 miles v6 5sp excab $6800". YES!!! we went my mom put 2500 down and I've been paying 200 dollars a month and 170 for insurance (ticket 78 in a 60)since, had it for almost a year now. and owe only 3000. racked up miles to 130000. I would get another truck maybe a V8 or a deisel dakota if they make one*hint* *hint*. but I would still keep my v6 dakota, never leave it, I love it.
sorry for the really long post but thats all folks.
no money no mods
but got a 4000 signing bonus for the navy so that'll pay it off and put a lsd in the differential just wating to finish 12 gd.

It was a lot cheaper credit wise. I had my eye on the solar yellow
R/T but couldn't afford the 18k+ price tag. My v-6 truck was
only $14k.

I agree with alot of the reasons why to go with a V6. In reality...I have an Uncle thant lives in a huge Dodge dealership and when i was at Basic and tech school I asked him to start looking for me. Told what i wanted and all and I said i would drive a V6 or V8. It just so happened that a clean '99 cc 318 came across the lot and so I grabbed it up. Cant complain too much about anything except the Gas pump. Insurance is a little higher too since its a V8 and Im only 18 ($220). But i guess ill take the 260 HP i get. Anyways, thanks for the input

Got a V6 because i had trouble finding a V8 5spd. Looked around 3 months, saw 1 287 or 318 5spd (talking about Gen 3 here). So i got my 2000 CC Black 5spd 239 last spring. Looking now theres lots of hte 4.7L 5spds hittin the market

still like my V6, get 20mpg, bone stock truck right now (dunno why everyone says they get 13-14). Doubt anyone with a stock V8 gets 20mpg

the 3.9 is a great ingine if your starting off or an experienced driver. had mine for 2 years, it's an 89 has 217000 miles on it and i only paid 100 dollars for it ran when i picked it up and has never offered to give up on me. will be modified very soon.

PS:found way to get over 300 horse power out of it without going into the ingine or turbochargers

just think about this, my truck is 15 years old and i get about 20 miles to the gallons on regular with no engine work and my uncle has a 98 with a 360 and he gets 10 mpg running premium. tell me how a v8 gets better gas milage. and the reason people get 13-15 mpg out of a 3.9L is because they cant drive

Chilton...I was starting to think I was the only one here that could get 20+ mpg out of a V6. Best to date has been 23.9 but normally around 18/22.
Not trying to flame anyone, but I have a tough time figuring why so many have trouble getting 20+ out of a 3.9.

I hate my v6 its horrible sooo slow i get beatin by my friends 5 speed talon everyday its pathetic. The reason i got the v6 is because it was my first car and i got it for 5grand with 42k mi. on it. I got a good deal but the gas mileage isnt that great and i have intake, TB spacer, headers and exhaust.

you got beat by your friends talon, which is made to go fast.and you get crappy gas milage, but this is your first car, tell me what other care can you compare it too? you have all those mods, thats probably why your gas mileage is crappy, cuz your trying to keep up with your friends talon and keeping your foot to the ground. If I tried to keep up with my brothers avenger(v6) I would have bad gas mileage too. But if he needs something moved, who's vehicle could do it???
I get around 16mpg but thats cuz I like taking off fast(poor rear left tire) and like cruising around 75 on Loop 1604 and I37 south. And I leave it in 4th. but thats how I choose to drive. I'm not complaing, sure I blow 40 bucks a week on gas but o-well.
