From the "How to Select a Motor Oil for Your Car or Truck"

Sooner or later, wear from abrasive particles and deposits from carbon and oxide insolubles will interfere with efficient combustion in an engine. Valve train wear (cams, valve guides, etc.) can impact timing and valve movement. Wear of rings, pistons and cylinder walls influences volumetric compression efficiency and combustion blow-by resulting in power loss. Particle-induced wear is greatest when the particle sizes are in the same range as the oil film thickness.

For diesel and gasoline engines, there is a surprising number of laboratory and field studies that report the need to control particles below 10 microns. One such study by General Motors concluded that, "controlling particles in the 3 micron to 10 micron range had the greatest impact on wear rates and that engine wear rates correlated directly to the dust concentration levels in the sump."

Does anyone have any photos of how the bypass looks when mounted on the Dakota? There was a thread that had the full bypass system mounted on a Ram. I would like to see one mounted on a Dakota 4.7 (like what I have). I am interested in where the bypass filter is mounted and how/where you route the input/output lines. I've seen the cartoon, but I would like to see a 'real world' application.

I do not have any installation pictures on a Dakota. I know that Greg (who has been posting on this thread) has installed the Amsoil Dual By-Pass on his Dakota. Hopefully he will take some photos and post them here for everyone to see. Any comments Greg?

The one I want to see is the unit AmsoilSponsor recommends (single bypass?). It's the one that mounts the intake on the oil pressure unit for the bypass filter and dumps the oil (somehow) into the pan. It sounds like a 'simple' installation (and maybe even removable for 'warranty work').

Well I've been gone for about a month and just thought I would return and let everyone know who is the least bit interrested that I just did my 5000 mile first oil filter change and my thoughts on the system are as follows... The oil never started to even change color until the 4000 mile mark and without the system with the mobil 0-30 it would turn or start to turn dark after the first 100 to 200 miles... I've been steadily getting 22 to 25 miles per gallon just depending on how steep the mountain is and just how slow the traffic in front of me is, which is what determines the gear in which I have to down gear into... I still think with what little room there is on the dakotas that the system should have come with about 10 to 12 feet of hose instead of the 8... That way I could have mounted it in a little better manor... I put the oil filters in the bumper for easy to get to location... The oil lines and everything went together very nicely... The thing that mounts where the oil filter was should have come with 90 degree elbows, just to clear the frame a little better...

Well after the first 5000 miles I have no leaks and after replenishing the 2 quarts of oil of what I let leak out and the filter the oil is back to looking almost clear again... The only thing I have noticed about oil pressure is when I'm driving consistantly for an hour or so at 80 to 85mph at around 2500 rpms the oil pressure will drop down to just above the 40 psi mark... The rest of the time just driving around it stays steadily where it once did at the mark just below the 110 psi mark... I don't have any pictures of it nor a way to post them if I did so sorry about that... BUT so far I like and think many others would to if anyone else were interrested in the system...

AMSOIL By-Pass Oil Filter Units - Retail and AMSOIL Preferred Customer Pricing

Engine wear is caused by dirt particles of about five (5) microns. The AMSOIL By-Pass Oil Filter removes particles less than one (1) micron or larger, virtually eliminating engine wear. AMSOIL By-Pass Oil Filters filter all of the oil in a six quart system in about five minutes at an average engine speed equivalent to 45 mph.

I recommend the AMSOIL By-Pass Filter System for passenger vehicles, however, I recommend the "Single" By-Pass vs. the "Dual" By-Pass.

IMHO - a standard "Single" By-Pass with "return oil to the top side of the engine", is the smartest set-up and takes up less space. Plus, it is easy to remove and place it on your next vehicle.

*** Three (3) Reasons to choose AMSOIL By-Pass Installations:

1) - AMSOIL is EASY to set-up,

2) - AMSOIL uses spin on filters that are similar to regular spin-on Full Flow Filters -
...... but the By-Pass Filters have more high desinsty media, and

3) - the ease of changing AMSOIL filters.
__________________________________________________

*** Four Reasons That I Prefer the "Single" By-Pass.

1) I prefer the Single By-Pass because the Dual By-Pass has be shown to reduce oil pressure in some applications. The Dual By-Pass Units restrict main oil flow to get differential pressure for the bypass filter.

However, I DO HAVE many customers who run the Dual By-Pass on diesel engine pickup trucks with absolutely NO PROBLEMS. As long as the hoses are kept fairly short and you minimize viscous flow losses, there is very little drop in oil pressure vs. the stock filter setup.

Note: As long as you have an oil pressure guage and not an idiot light --- I have absolutely no problem recommending the Dual By-Pass.

2) The Single By-Pass takes up less space, and it is easier to find a spot to mount it since it is much smaller.

3) Single By-Pass is less expensive to "set up", and is less expensive to maintain.

4) Single By-Pass is Easier to remove and place on your next vehicle (size issue)

*** Reasons for using the AMSOIL Dual Remote By-Pass Oil Filter.

1) It allows the use of a LARGER full flow filter. -- which could be up to 3 times larger than the OEM. In total, this could equate to 3 quarts more oil capacity which offers greater protection for the engine.

2) The By-Pass filter is a spin on and is very easy to change without creating a mess.

3) The "setup" is a very clean installation.

4) The hoses for the "setup" are "industrial hydraulic hoses" with reusable connectors -- they don't leak -- and can be easily relocated to another vehicle if you sell your Dakota.

5) By-Pass Filtration Continuously Cleans The Oil.

6) Save $$$ with EXTENDED DRAINS - the "system" will pay for itself and save $$$ in the long run.

7) A regular Full Flow Filter will filter at 10 micron, and then NOT let the bypass valve open at some point -- releasing some of the dirt back into the oil galley. By-Pass filters -- once the dirt is in the filter it stays in the filter until you change it.

A FAQ: Why isn't By-Pass Filtration available as OEM (standard on a vehicle)?

I believe that the reason why By-Pass filtration is not a standard for vehicle manufacturers is because of the potential for profit loss. If vehicles last too long, auto manufacturers can't expect you to return and buy a new vehicle.

For the consumer, By-Pass filtration is one way to keep repair costs down AND allow the engine to last much longer (and perform close to "brand new"). IMHO -- Vehicle manufacturers are merely concerned with the vehicle lasting until it is out of warranty.

Think of this also. If every vehicle came factory installed By-Pass oil filtration, what would the oil companies do? Motor oil demand would drop by 75% ... and they certainly would see a drop in profits. That is why you see the "quickie lubes" (some owned by major oil companies) pushing the current 3,000 mile recommended oil change interval -- it puts lots of $$$ in their pockets.

For someone who hopes to never rebuild an engine, the By-Pass filtration is an excellent choice.

In Layman Terms: Better Filtration ( Particle Control ) Is Key To Controlling Wear !

I sold Amsoil in the mid 1970's. I put it in my 1973 VW Superbeetle. I lived in Colo. and had to buy a electric cab heater, because the car ran so much cooler with the synthetic. They have changed their sales pitch some. our pitch then was 100,000 mile oil. We were told to put it in run it 3000 and change it and filter,(they didn't sell filters then), after re-installing it you could go 50,000 change the filter, add a quart and go another 50,000 before changing oil.
I guess that didn't work out. I'll be calling on you soon. Toby IN TEXAS
