Hello fellas, I recently received a 1999 Dodge dakota sport 4x4 with the 3.9 auto club cab. recently when i have been driving, there seems to be a grinding sound (like a sandy mesh sound, but more metallic). this only happens within the rpm range of 1600 and 2000 rpm, and thats only within that range for some reason. i used to think it was the tranny, and it wouldnt suprise me knowing the probs with the tranny's in these things, i thought this because it used to happen in 3rd and 4th gear only, now its within the 1600 to 2000 rpm range at any time in any gear, and its gotten pretty loud. i dono what it is, i personally think its engine noice, my father told me it might be the gasket, i thought so as well, but i was wondering what i can do to find out more, or do somethnig about it before i take it in to get it checked out. i have no power loss, but i dont want it to take a shi* on me for no reason, i convinced my parents to help me buy a dakota rather than a ranger and the last thing i want is for it to have a huge problem with it.. its weird cuz its only during that 1600 to 2000 rpm range, and its bad cuz that where my rpm's usually are... sorry for the legthy letter but you guys are awesome and any help will be appreciated! ( oh yeah the trucks got 78k miles on it..) thanks a bunch fellas

Check the u joints on drive shaft

removal is required to see if they are rusty dry
and tight

could be wheel bearing or brakes

hard to say without actualy hearing the noise
