Subject: Truck keeps cutting off.... Help!
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 3.9 97 dakota automatic. Lately, whenever I first start it up, the rpm will drop down to about 400-500, almost cut off, and then jump back up to normal rpm, which I think is around 750-800. Well, the past couple of days, the rpm will drop down and then it will cut off. It does it right as I start it up. But the rest of the time I am driving it does perfectly normal. Anyone have any ideas please give me a start as to what to look for. Thanks!!!

By the way, the plugs are new enough that it should not be the problem, they are also what dodge recommends. I keep my truck well maintained. Thanks again for any ideas.

also, did you change gasoline octanes/brands? my 98 is tempermental it only likes 87 octane - I tried the 92 and it started the stalling crap - ran that out and went back to the 87, now all is well again. Screwy, eh?

Yea, the cleaning the IAC (idle air control) makes sense. You said go to speedtweeks.ca for instructions on how to clean it. What is "speedtweeks.ca"? Thanks man.

I'm quoting this directly from my Hayne's Manual for 97-99 Daks (and 98-99 Durangos).

Page 6-18

"1 The idle speed is controlled by the Idle Air Control (IAC) valve, located on the throttle body. The IAC valve regulates the air bypassing the throttle plate by moving the pintle in or out of the air passage. The IAC valve is controlled by the PCM, adjusting the idle speed depending on the running condition of the engine (air conditioning system, power steering, cold and warm running etc.)."

I guess all of us imaginarily cleaned our IACs when they were all carboned up then, right? And I guess the people who wrote our manual don't know that they are writing about parts which don't even exist on our engines?

Hmmm...I think not.

And I apologize for sounding so rude above... IACs are sometimes referred to as AICs.

Thanks for the help man! I followed the instructions off that website you gave me and cleaned the IAC this weekend. It definitely needed it. It had a bunch of carbon buildup on it. And guess what, it doesn't cut off anymore, so I guess that was it. By the way, "boneheads?" or maybe I should call you "boner head" there is such thing as an IAC idle air control solenoid on dakotas. Look it up. I forget who I am quoting here, but someone famous once said: "It is better to be thought of as a fool, than to open your mouth and remove all doubt." Or something to that effect. Thanks again.
