Subject: O2 Sensor???
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 93 V6 5spd. For the past 3 years I have not had a Cat Conveter last more than 8 or 9 months. When I let of the gas I get a slight backfire type sound. It is real bad if I downshift. I think the original O2 sensor is still in the truck with 198,000 miles on it. The engine was rebuilt at 165,000 but I didn't change it then. Could this be causing the problem. I am not sure because I still get 22-24 MPG and usually a bad O2 sensor will hurt your gas mileage. Any help would be great. Don't want to spend $60 on a new sensor if its not needed.

O2 sensors typically fall off around 60,000 miles, and need to be replaced. Your cats are probably burning up from excess fuel being dumped into the exhaust. When you replace the sensor, make sure to unplug the battery for a few minutes to reset the computer so it'll "see" the new sensor.

I have been useing the carsound, I need to figue out why it's making those sounds. The muffler shop had no idea, they said it couldn't be the O2, but I think it may be. Guess there is only one way to find out.

Sensor life is variable, but if you're getting that kind of gas mileage, there is NO WAY that the O2 sensor needs changing. It will cause gas mileage to fall off dramatically if bad.
My O2 sensor in my car lasted 190K miles. Previous car's sensor was still good at 157K miles. My dad's Acclaim lasted 118K miles before the sensor went.

Backfiring can mean a momentary rich condition, and this can have many causes. How about valve timing, or condition of valves?

As I said, I just rebuilt the engine. Timing seems fine, Valves were all redone with the rebuild. It has to be something that wasn't changed with the rebuild. All the internal engine parts were replaced with Mopar Performance parts or equivilant. Any other ideas? Would I definatly get bad gas mileage with a bad O2 sensor?

94 Dak shop manual:
Test O2S sensor with ohmmeter, disconnect the sensor connector & connect ohmmeter test leads across the white wire terminals of the sensor. Resistance should be between 5 and 7 ohms. Replace sensor if the ohmmeter displays an infinity (open) reading.

Hi, I have a 2000 Dodge Dakota Quadcab 4.7 and have had an on and off dash sensor light with the RPM raising up and down while the engine idles. I was thinking O2 sensor because it happened just after I used some fuel injector cleaner through it. Any and all help appreciated.

this problem sounds like a map sensor or a tps sensor not an 02 sensor, ive been working on car my entire life and the only time ive seen an 02 sensor fail, is if it gets too hot or gets hit.
the only way an o2 sensor can get too hot is if the map sensor is out of range or the tps sensr is out of range, this is assuming that there are no dead cylinder or malfunctioning injector!!

I didnt think about the injectors, I think they are off the original motor, so they must have 200K on them. Guess I should change them.
