1. Would a O2 sensor cause my truck to run rough at idle. I noticed it seems to run a lil smoother with the O2 sensor un pluged. Also going down the road it seemed to run smoother. It might be just my imagination but im not sure. I do beleive that its the original one i might be wrong but it looks pretty beat up.

2.I put a cherry bomb muffler on my truck and its just a little louder than my stock one was. IT got ride of all the leaking and what not i had but nothing like my friend S 10 sounds like For sound. Could this be because of the extremely restictive Cat that the 87 dakotas came with. Or my truck is just stupid and has crap for sound. What could i do to make it louder?

3. Scanning my computer. I have tried the 3x thing with the ingnition but i dont get a blinkin check engine light. Lookin at my dash with alot of light i do not see a check engine light. So how is it possible to scan my truck.

4. Would E.G.R. Valve cuase my truck to stall or run slightly rough at idle.

One more thing my truck isnt running extremly rough at idle. I just get a studder which in return you here a basic puffin noise through the exhuast like every other 4 5 seconds, with the nice pur of the motor and some motor shake but nothing extreme. Which makes me think something is starting to either miss read or not work properly. The best way to explain the puffin noise is like one piston miss fireing but i dont noticed any power loss while driving down the road. If i have anything miss spelled im sry, and who ever read all of this thanks for your time.

Folks, I now own a 2003 Silverado and just feel it's a little big. Was a Nissan truck driver for over 10yrs and guess I sort of made a mistake buying this but think the Dakota might fit me fine. I'm just curious as to if I should go with the V8 or V6 even though it's approx $2000 more with the 5sp trans and everything...Thanx for any help.

Go with a V8...if you get a V6 after having a Silverado, you're really gonna be wishing you had the power back. lol.

For starters, I'd look for a vacuum leak. This would cause the idle to be less than smooth due to a leaning out from the vacuum leak. Unplugging the O2 sensor would cause a "full-rich" condition, which would at least partially compensate for the leanout. The 3.9 has the same exhaust ports as the 5.2, so uncorked, it should sound pretty good. Tiny exhaust and cat really choke it. Open the choke points and it'll sound a lot better. EGR? Cap off the vacuum connection and line and see if anything changes. It's supposed to open only after operating temp is reached. Does it act differently when cold and warm? If not, I'd not suspect the EGR. An intermittant miss could just mean a tune-up is in order.

87dakota500,
If you disconnected your O2 sensor and it runs better, tha your O2 sensor is defintely bad. Take it from a former 87 Dak owner, I went thru the same thing on 2 differnt 87 daks. The O2 sensors on the Gen-1 daks need to be replaced every 60,000 miles period-end of discussion.

I re-read your post, give your truck a good tune up, new distributor cap, rotor, plug wires, and plus, it wouldn't hurt to replace the the coil, ballast resistor, PCV valve.
