When I am stopped and have the steering wheel turned slightly to the left and let off the brake and start coasting, I get a popping noise in my front end. It is only when I am going pretty slow and that is the only time it happens. Anyone else have this or know what it is?

1. It depends on the year of your truck, but there have been reports of upper ball joints separating on 98-03 Durangos. The popping noise you are hearing could be your steering knuckle/spindle shifting it's position when placed under a load other than a neutral, no stress position. An alignment shop can check it for you for free if you don't know what to look/test for. If that's the case, immediate replacement is necessary to keep your truck safe.

2: Worn tie-rod ends. Again, the ball end wears it's socket if left unlubricated. You can gently pry on the steering linkage with a long screwdriver or prybar. It should be fairly stiff and rotate only a few degrees in either direction. If you need replacement tie rod ends, JC Whitney sells heavy duty Moog tie rods with grease fittings for a cheaper than what you'd pay at Autozone.

3: Ford Excursions have a popping sound in the front end because the front sway bar end links work loose. This could happen on any vehicle with age, and it only requires tightening.

4. Worn control arm bushings. These should be easy to see if they're worn out. You might have to bounce the truck up and down while looking at the control arm pivot points, but you should see it.

If ideas 1,2 or 4 existed, I would think that your front tires would show some wear, unless this just recently started. #3 will just affect your handling and make it a little more sloppy, but you wouldn't necessarily notice it unless you had performance tires and drove aggressively.

Any other ideas?

mustang boy thinks if its ford its like dodge, and is unknowledgeable enough to not realize that durango/dakota front ends are same. go back to ford site, or keep mouth shut until thougholy versed on dodge problems before handing out useless advice.
popping is either ball joints going out or if 4X2 (2WD) steering rack. both dangerous to you and others if not fixed soon, wheels either fall off or both point outward at same time with no warning other then a louder pop.

badassdak,
I have the same noise when turning at lower speeds. But i had it in at Dodge and i was charged $40 and the onlt thing told me was that its not the Rack n pinoin. So i had it in at midas and had everything on the front end looked at and they couldnt find anything.I still hear the noise but not all the time.
Doesnt sound like something that should be making a noise like this but who knows. If you find out what your problem is send me a e-mail.I would like to know what this sound might be.Thanks

Oh...the Rack n pinoin has been replaced 3 times, upper control arms, not sure on the name steering shaft??? maybe, all this was about a year ago.And thats why it was in Dodge.Everything has a year warrenty. But just thought maybe someone might read this and have a idea.99 CC SLT

Check this site for info, about half way down:

full/index.cfm/id/2260

It looks like the ball joints and the lower control arm go away. Sorry not sure how to make this a link.
