I have an '88 dakota 3.9 2wd with 230k on it and lately it has been hard to start. It will turn over just fine...but no start. By the time I pop the hood to check for the basics..fuel and fire...it starts fine. Also sometimes it just shuts down while cruising but again it will start up again after a couple of trys. No codes are being displayed and normal tune-up items have been replaced and also I put in a new fuel pump 6 months ago. anyone with a suggestion

Just a possibility, you need to give your truck a tune up; new cap, rotor, spark plugs, and plug wires. I have seen intermittent problems caused by a faulty spark plug wire between the coil and distributor. I had a car that did this, it took a while to find the problem, it turned out to be be just what I mentioned. If it still does it after this, the coil might need to be replaced. I not sure if the 88's have a ballast resistor in line with the coil or not. If it's starting to go bad it could do the same thing.

For 35 to 40 bucks you might want to replace the Hall effect pickup that lives underneath the rotor, I had some intermittent shut offs while driving and the test in the manual was inconclusive, changed it and no problems since.

Thanks Gordon...it was the wiring from the pickup in the dist. I wiggled it and the truck came alive and while it was running I wiggled it again and it shut off. Total parts $34.07...20 mins labor fixed it.
