i am so glad to have found this site!! been helpful already. last week, after the alternator went, the abs and pbrake lights came on. after my b/f replaced the alt, the lights are still on. we havent even driven it yet, but tonite he disconnected the battery cable and that didnt make them go out. so, at least now we know what to look for,and I dont have to obsess that my brakes are gonna fail! im gonna take it for a drive tomorrow and see how it does.
but anyway, just for your notes...its a 93 v6, with 170,000 miles on the second motor!ive had to replace alot, but its been run hard--my son had it first, then i got it and have been putting avg 500 miles a week on it for the past three years, due to my work.
you will probably be hearing alot from me!!!

Hi ter, hope to be hearing from you often, but with good news.
anyway, did you take the neg. teriminal off battery and then turn ignition to on position for about 30 sec. then reconnect the battery?
Also, I,ve found two things can be the culprit.
One, you just have to drive the truck a few miles and it will "learn" that everything is alright.
Two, you may have to have a service center remove the codes.
I may be wrong but just thought I'd put my .02 in.

seems ever since i FINALLY bought a second vehicle with payments, my truck is throwing one fit after another.it was running terrible(thats why i finally broke down and got the car, and to have two vehicles)had the cat conv replaced. that didnt help everything,so then we found out the distributor was bad and fixed that.when i first drove it,it ran like a champ...within in a day it started acting up again, and then the alt went, and thats when the abs and pbrake lights came on the dash, and wouldnt go out after fixing it. we did the disconnect thing, and that didnt make them go out, but i didnt drive it. today at lunch i decided to go get it and drive it for awhile, maybe the lights would go out, or at least id be able to see how it was running and check the brakes. i started it up, got around the corner and it was hesitating alot in the low gears..thought maybe it was cuz i needed gas and it has been sitting a few weeks after running constantly for the past three years.......right about the time i was gettin some speed, about a half mile,3/4 down the road,i smelled something burning then SAW SMOKE (!) coming from the steering column. needless to say i panicked and pulled over....the abs and pbrake lights went off,i shut it off for a few min, started it up and no smoke.and guess what--the lights stayed off!! i started again to make sure they were working and they are, they just arent staying on anymore............so i decided to drive it back to the house.no smoke or burning smell on the way back, but it was hesitating real bad again. had to get back to work quick but looked under the hood didnt see anything there. what the hell???am i finally gonna have to retire my truck?now,i am kind of scared of it :( !!
it has 170,000 miles on the second motor. it burns or leaks-not sure--about a qt of oil a week, and recently ive been getting smoke from the exhaust off and on.

Teri, Have you ever had the plenum plate gasket replaced? It's a steel plate under the manifold that is prone to leaking. That may be where your hesitation and oil consumption is coming from. Just my guess, but it's an easy check.

WOW, that's the wierdest way to get your light out I've ever heard. Did you check under the dash to see if there is anthing burnt there? also, if the smoke came from the steering column you might want to take the outer plastic cover off and see if there's anything melted in there. I've never had this happen in my dak but I have had a few english cars, from the sixties, that would do this. With them it's just a normal part of the driving experience.
