My 98 3.9v6 dakota seems to be running rich. It used to be on climbing hills I would get a sulfer stink but now it seems to be more often and not just on hills? What could be the problem? Could it be a dirty air filter, or a pcm problem? I appricate if anyone can offer some sugestions.

two words:
catalytic converter.

If you are getting that smell it would be a cat going bad.....since you have a 98 if the dealership should replace it for free.

I have a 2001 3.9 and I have the same problem, plus it missfires when I nail the gas sometimes.I took it to the dealer and they said there's nothing wrong. Is there code for a bad cat or does it need some other type of diagnosis?

i don't know about a code, but a diagnostic would show something is wrong with the cat.....if it is the cat in your case.

I had the same problem and found that if you use any fuel higher than 87 octane, it will burn up your stock cat. I simply got a new one through the warranty and had it removed and am keeping it incase they decide to start emissions here in Penn. My truck runs better now and it gave me more HP. If you hear a rattling coming from the rear of your truck it most likely is you cat. Good Luck.

this rotten egg oder from day one.As expected, the dealer says everything is ok. I called a few muffler shops to get there opinion. Not telling them of the make , model, year etc. and to my surprise they all said its a mixture problem not a cat problem.Dealer says mixture is fine.Where do I go from here? HELP !!
