Okay 91 with a 3.9.... Every time I go to rev the motor the damn timing retards like 30 degrees for some reason (happens at about 2400, also it does not have any power at all.) It should be advancing! Gerrrrr. I have replaced the fuel pump, pickup, distrib, rotor, plugs, pretty much everything ignition wise and fuel related trying to fix this damn problem. I am thinking that MAYBE I have a vacume line on backwards or something. If someone with a digital cam could take a few pics of the top of their motor with the air cleaner off I would be really happy. If anyones has any contintions on this please for the love of god let me know.

no way can a dist. retard 30 degrees from 0. the thing does not rotate internally to retard from 0 only to advance from it. the only way that could happen is you have somehow got a hold of a marine distribitor designed for a twin counterrotating engine out drive set up and put that into it.

I don't have anything marine on it.... Something is causing (in the ignition) to retard. I am gonna guess that whatever causes it to advance is broken or hooked up backwards or something. I don't know exactly what causes it to advance.... If I knew what caused it to advance I would atleast know where to start.
I am going to guess that a vacume line is backwards.

I know some of these engines are equiped with anti-knock software program in the computer that can retard the timing in the case of excessive pinging, but I don't know if that's what's going on here?

I'm new to Dakotas, but I'd guess it's strictly a computer issue. On Fords, you can loosen the knock sensor in the block, or put excessive amounts of teflon on the threads to make it less sensitive to detecting detonation.
When you adjust the distributor while the engine is running, the timing will briefly advance/retard, but the computer takes over and corrects it to what it sees fit.
If you change to a colder plug, like the Autolite 3923, you will get less detonation and your computer should allow a little more timing advance. Sounds great in theory, right?

Yes many codes... I don't think they are correct though.... Hell, poor timing and bad gas will throw a code, heh. A few of the codes are not even listed in any of the service manuals I have... Its pretty screwed up.

I'm thinkin' there is no knock sensor. Your spark advance is determined by the SMEC based on three inputs...coolant temp., engine rpm, and available manifold vacuum (MAP sensor).

yea, when I built the thing I did not rember one. Whats the smec? What I don't understand is how its retarding so bad that after any load or anything over 2400 to 2800 the dann thing retards. Do you think I need to replace the computer or something... I need things to check.

SMEC (Single Module Engine Computer) is just the computer. That sounds like the point at which vacuum would fall off, so I'd look at the MAP sensor first. They do fail eventually. If it's already reading on the low side, then it hits the vacuum dropoff, it will really pull back. Anyway, that's where I'd start, especially if it's an old sensor. Naturally, go over all the vacuum lines too to see if any are leaking.

rooster there ain't no knock senser in a dak, never was. there mat be others but the only one I know of that has one is the 3.5 Intrepid/Concorde/LHS engine that runs ok on 87 but will handle 89 and even 91 octain (recommended) due to a knock senser. Might be one in Hemi or neon srt or other hi performance engines, but not in dodge trucks. never to date.
