 Subject: 1988 speedometer problems

I just bought an 88 v6 man.trans dakota.
The previous owner said the speedo didnt work and he had the instrument cluster and speedo cable out of the truck when i bought it.
He had replacement parts from a salvage yard.
I hooked everything up and it still dosent work.
I then switched speed sensors and this didnt work either.
Any ideas or sugestions?

I bought a 1988 dakota 4WD with a 5 speed and the speedo doesnt work either except when i get over "45" but it seems like im going 15 mph slower- any help would be welcome fixing it or looking to buy a new speedo and tach- thanks
