Subject: only had 2 qts. of oil, damage?

Pretty much what the title says- I drained the oil and only 2 quarts came out, including filter. Do you think there was any damage done? 2002 v6.

Basically I got my dad a case of oil and a few filters for christmas and told him I'd take care of his oil changes. I changed it once and then my schedule got busy for 4 months and apparently he never checked his oil level. The truck ran fine before and after I changed the oil this weekend. I am hoping the oil pickup tube goes down far enough that it didn't hurt the pump by sucking dry. Any thoughts?

Something doesn't really sound right about that. A 2002 truck shouldn't burn that much between oil changes. Somewhere, somehow, you either have a leak somewhere or you have something wrong with the engine.

My mistake, it is a 2001, but I still agree with you. I was really surprised to see the underside as clean as it was. No seepage whatsoever. It does have 80,000 miles on it, but it doesn't smoke or anything. I think he went about 6,000 since the last time I did a change with 4qts. synthetic. But do you think that running it with such little oil in it did any damage that will affect me when the truck becomes mine next year?

HHHHMMMMM depends, what kinda syn where you using for starters??? If it was Mobil, Amsoil, Red Line, or Royal Purple, you might be allright to some degree... Was it making any kind of ticking noises??? I would really be willing to bet that your plenum gasket is about to go or is allowing some seepage by it...

Then you gotta take into acout that your filter almost holds 1 quart. I think it's like 3/4, but that still only leaves around 1 quart spread out in the oil pan which might equal up to around 1/4" or 1/2" at most in the deaper part... I seriously beleive in synthetic lubes, but in this case I really don't know and when using stock oil filtering system I would still change the syn every 3000 miles just like the regular dino oil if you want to see any longevity at all here... BUT you may allready have some serious damage... I would really keep a close eye on the oil level for the next few hundred miles to see if it really starts to burn it...

What color was your dipstick??? Blue or still grey... If blue, you've had some serious heat taking place in there...

Don't know and I really couldn't tell you until tearing things apart...

It certainly didn't do any good for the engine - but you were probably saved by the fact you used synthetic. If its not making noise, and the oil pressure appears to be good - then you are probably ok. I had a friend who went 13,000 miles without adding or checking his oil. When I changed it, a little more than a quart of "milk shake" poured out. he definitely had some piston slap after that - but the engine ran. since you had alot less distance than that; you had more oil left, I wouldn't lose any sleep. just make sure your dad either learns how to check the dipstick - or finds someone that can! The oil should be checked at least once a month.

Type of oil- Rotella synthetic. I believe it's not a true synthetic, it's a hydrocracked oil. The dipstick wasn't burnt. The oil was about 1/2"-5/8" up the dipstick. The truck had also been cooling down through a whole brake job, so the oil wasn't hot when I drained it. My dad is from the old school of changing dyno oil every 6,000 miles, and as long as have I disagreed with him, he was doing it to a chevy truck, which is mine now, and has 227,000 miles on the orig. motor. I hope this post doesn't become a debate about drain intervals, I believe in 3,000 whenever possible, but I'm sure someone like amsoil sponsor is going to chime in anyway. BTW, great product, every year I use it in all 3 parts of my Softail.
I'd like to think no damage was done, since I will be getting this truck in the near future. Plenium gasket eh? Is that common on these motors?

that nobody waws smart enough to catch the 3.9, this is the six forum, only holds 3.5 quarts in the pan so you were only 1.5 low.
as far as that much oil in a short time two 3 words, belly pan gasket.

Actually he said he got 2 qts out, including the filter, so I had him figured for 2 qts low.

Actually that's the way I think everyone but "one point" figured it up to come out to 99DAK...

As far as the belly pan or plenum gasket, it's the gasket on the underside of the intake manifold, which requires pulling of the intake manifold to replace... You can take a flashlight and shine down into the intake through the throttle body and look for some oil puddledge forming up to see if it's bad or not...

Unless the engine just has extreme blow by, I really can't think of anything else that would cause it to burn that kind of an amount of oil...
