hopefully one of you guys will read this and know exactly what's wrong...
truck would run fine at any constant speed, but as soon as i would step on the gas it would miss and backfire (little pops seeming to come from below the engine). so i thought...well i have'nt changed the plugs/cap/rotor in about 125k miles, lets see what that does...when i pulled the old spark plugs out i could see right there that they were part of the problem, they were so worn or improperly gapped that they were about twice normal gap. so i bought the recommended plug (can't remember the # something like 32** or 39**-the one's ive seen Larry recommend-) and i gapped them at .045, replaced the cap and rotor, started the truck up, and it ran great...no missing, no backfires, just smooth as glass.
well now, after about 1000 miles, the truck is starting to miss/backfire again...
i didn't replace the original plug wires yet because i had to order them and they have'nt arrived yet.

so what could be the problem???
thanks, chris

did u gap them at 45? do you have a after market ignition? if not i would take the out and gap em at 35, unless u have a hotter coil which then i would go to 40. if the wires dont help out your prob i would try replacing the coil too.

Aren't 3923's recommended to be gapped at .040 - .045? I know they usually don't run good at the factory recommended gap...but I don't remember for sure what gap is recommended. I was thinking it was what I just said though...but it might also depend on if they're the regular 3923's or the platinum ones...ah screw it. I forget...lol

Yeh I think your right Josh... I think it was something like this... Regular 3923's with stock ignition is suppost to be gapped right at or around the stock gap setting, then the ap3923's can be run at .040 I thinks anyway with stock ignition... Or maybe it's .040" with the 3923's and .045" with the ap3923's... I'de say go with the .040" since the .045" worked for awhile and maybe just go ahead and get the platinum tipped ap3923's and then run the .040 or .045 or what ever you want to run... Sounds like anything would be better than what came out of it to begin with :)) Guess you'll just have to wait for Larry to really get the right answer on this or spend a few minutes searching through more archives ; ))

cjski,
If you have a stock ignition gap the plugs at .045. If, when you check them their not tan in color drop the gap by .005, keep checking till they stay tan.
I have a question though. Did you replace the wires? If not this might be a good idea. Also your truck has 125k? Have you changed the 02 sensor and cleaned the throttle boddy lately?
These are relatively inexpensive cures. After these you may have to check the intake plenum or some other emmisions problem.
Oh yeh, what year is your dak?

Check and see if they're tan...if they are, leave em as they are. I they're not, like TOMZ said, drop em to .040 and see if they run tan then. If they still don't...drop em to .035.

Autolite plugs

Stock ignition
reg 3923 .040
AP3923 .045

Aftermarket ignition
reg .050
Ap .060

And read them should be tan

Another thing to do that helps is index the plugs
so the open end is aimed towards the intake
manifold between 11 and 1 o clock, we have been
doing this and getting feed back from customers
smother running and gas mileage increase's

You can buy a washer kit to index with diff
thickness washers or just swap off other plugs
and a flat file but no more than .005 per side
removed from washers.

I would say he needs to replace cap and rotor also
a bad wire will foul a new plug in a 1000 miles
just like he described running good after plug
change than bad.

I would also replace the o2 at 125k way over do

Just hit 22.6mpg last check and it seams even
better this time, the 22.6 was on a relearn
after installing new performance lifters and
just a gasket match on the intake

We have also done a few gasket match on customers
trucks and the feed back is better mileage and
performance and big help on low end torque very
noticeable in O/D around 55mph you can feel the
gains. no internal mods just a gasket match.

I was getting 20 21 after gasket match jumped to
22.6 thats a 1.6 mpg gain from just a gasket
match nothing else was done to the truck customers
are also reporting the same 1 to 1.5 mpg gain
from doing this

Larry hows your other engine doing now???

Sorry don't mean to jump in on this other post like this, but I was kinda wondering how Larry's next build up was coming along...

Did those special pistons work out all right... I've only gotten one of my heads back on and was in the process of degreeing in the cam... Real simple after you reallize exactly what your doing... I just hope I can get everything back together and fire it up before too much longer and do some "test" driving ;)) I'm expecting good things from this one... The guy that originally showed me how to start out on the port and polish told me that from what I've done to the heads alone that I should see at the least 20 extra ponies just from them... They looked 100% better after I got done with them:)) Just hope I didn't take too much out... haha hope not...

You don't have any numbers on your newly restroked engine yet do you??? I'm expecting from what you did have that you should have somewhere right at 300rwhp now and I sure hope you do :)) Well be sure to let us all know when you do get done...

Chris,
There should be one O2 sensor before the cat and one after the cat... you'll see something with a 2 lil wires sticking out of the pipe I think (never changed an O2...just going off memory).
