I bought a 99 dakota 3.9L a couple months ago and just realized that when you let it idle for more than 10 minutes or so it will start knocking or tapping. sounds like its comming from the passenger side of the engine bay. Any ideas on what this might be or how to fix it?

Check the compression of each cylinder to see if you have ample compression from a minimum of 100 psi up,

Also change oil & filter.

Pull all your spark plugs make sure to mark your wires for reinstallation.

Use a compression guage available at most Auto parts store. Follow directions.

Screw guage into one cyl at a time, crank motor over 5-6 times and read guage measurement in psi and write it down. If you have a cylinder that reads much lower say 25psi then you might have a bent valve or bent rod which is letting the rocker arm make noise.

Take a big long screw driver or a cut off broom
handle put it on the motor where you think its
coming from and lightly against your ear.

low compresion wont knock or tap.

The poor mans stethascope

LOL but it does transfer sound quit good

timing chain rattle
lifter tic
PCV valve rattle
sometimes a bad tensioner pully will make strange
noises mine makes like a bell chiming latly and
need to get one soon.

worn dist and shaft

1 thing why is this truck idling so long 3 to 5
min and go, I like to let the roller rockers
get drenched in oil than I go, you will also save
a little gas letting it idle 3 to 5 because it
will reach closed loop sooner when you start
driving and run off the o2 instead of the temp
IAT, TPS, and map sensor and set tables for
open loop better fuel economy in closed loop
reading o2

The belt itself can make weird noises
