awhile ago you left me a reply about doing the crank sensor mod. I did the mod, it is very nice and it is noticeable. Doesn't really make the truck faster, but feels like more power and i don't have to tach up as high to get any power from the next gear. I also put the brass cap and rotor MO26 & MO28. Kept factory wires and put new plugs in. Wow, what a difference. I stayed with the champions cause i tried the 3923's and didn't like them. Is there another plug that will make this mod even better? Eventually i will do exhaust and i have a drop in K&N. I did the TPS but was not sure i really felt a difference so i set it back to factory. Will a chip do any better instead of this mod. If i get a flowmaster what type of setup should i use. there is center in and out, offset in center out, etc. What happens if water gets in where i removed the grommet from the crank sensor, that has been bugging me. we're headed for 5 straight days of rain here in PA. I appreciate your help and if no one else resonds, i know you always respond back to people without leaving smarta$$ remarks unlike some of the other little babies on here. thanks

Yes on some stock trucks the colder plug does not
run well after you improve the intake side is the
time to try them.

What year was this truck.

I and a lot of customers are running the Jet stage
2 chips, as far as performance increse maybe a
little better pull around 2500 3000 rpm but what
they do is develope some nice low end gains that
are noticeable and the reason we use them is all
the trucks show a 1 to 3 gas mileage gain.

I am pulling 22 23 mpg with my 4X4, all the
boltons and mods and a jet 2 chip, without the
chip its like 19 20 mpg

They run the best with a good 180 thermo you will
pick up from the chip, I recomend the stage 2 to
anyone looking to improve there gas mileage and
they will run on a stock truck 180 thermo and 87
oct fuel. not as jet says you do not need all
the mods to get the mileage gain from the chip
as yoyu add mods the chip will benifit you more
they do work

A lot of guys buy them for speed but the jet chips
do there timing advance at 2500 rpm and up at wot
nothing so it would not improve 1/4 times at WOT

However the modified signals and the small
processer in the chip make the comp run a tighter
air fuel ratio(gas mileage increase and low end
torque)gains

thanks Larry. the crank sensor mod seems to be helping with gas mileage, ive been watching it. how much more will a chip give me versus the crank sensor mod? if i get a chip do i put the crank sensor back to factory? i have a 2002 rc, 5spd sport. i gave up on trying to make it fast. I don't have that kind of money. i just want a little more torque and better gas. i have to get my flowmaster yet, but don't know which setup cause they have them offset or centered, etc. im hoping the better muffler will help too. will a 180 thermo benefit me any with the crank sensor mod. thanks for your help

larry,
what did you do to get your gas mileage?
i have a 3.9,auto and get 13mpg[89,4x4]with a high energy ignition,plugs gapped .050,duels cat back,ported tbi and shaft,transgo kit,3.90s,
even have a device to fool the computer to think its rich on the o2,[got me 1mpg]had o2 checked, seems to be working fine[without device]

i can get 15mpg if i drive 45-50mph

truck runs super other than mileage

Larry, I running a Jet stage 2 chip on my 97 4x2 3.9, along with the other mods and I have noticed it certainly helps the low end. I have a few hills out here that I use to test out some mod. The I like the most has a 15 degree incline. I have notice when I accelerate up that hill wot, I have a slight amount of pinging that I did not have without the jet chip. I have 180 thermostat, msd system, and ap3923's gapped at .060. I do not need to run the higher octane as recommended for the jet chip.

Try indexing your plugs it may help the ping

open end up towards intake manifold between
11am and 1pm 12 noon being straight up.

The design of the head sends the squash gas
right on to the open end of the plug

We have tried it on a half dozen trucks and it
helps smoth out the running and all are saying
there gas mileage improved, all with msd systems
including my own just hit 22.6mpg 95 4X4 92 motor
all bolt ons and gasket match intake

Leave the crank sensor where it is and just add
the stage 2 chip and a good 180 thermo that don't
run cold, robertshaw, stant superstat, Jet

You can run the stage 2 with the stock 195 but
if you get ping change thermo and plugs to help
ping, I ran mine with 195 no ping but got better
perf with the 180 and 3923 plugs with no other
mods to the truck at the time except cold air

I missed the last part

No on the gas try some reg, every 5 degrees is
like adding 1 point to gas rating its just a
derivability index 87 89 92 anti knock index
that's how the 180 thermo helps and the chip
was designed to do its best work at 180

After switching to the regular fuel take it easy for the first
few hundred miles the reg gas will ignite at lower temps
and burn faster than premium fuel, it will take a while to
readjust the air fuel ratio, very few of the trucks we have
set up this way ping, besides that the Jet chip does not
advance timing under WOT conditions

It will cooler iat temps and step up the tps signal
after 1 volt by about .2 .3 that and make the comp
moitor the air fuel ratio closer holding it more steady
thats where tha low end gains come from very noticeable
especially on the high way cursing and holding the
air?fuel ratio closer also improves gas mileage

At 2500 it will raise tps voltage delay 4th shift
drop the iat temp 30 to 50 degrees giving a timing
advance and more fuel at around a 13.9 A/F ratio
over the 14.7 normal they do help if you look
close enough at what they do

There is a small processer in the jet chips

Premium fuel requires more heat to ignite and will
burn slower, if its still not burnt when your exhaust
opens the motor will run hot add more fuel to
cool itself down

Here's what's on the stock motor running reg and
getting fantastic mileage with reg fuel, was running
mid getting only 18 to 20
reg went to 21
added stage 2 chip last check 22.6 on a relearn
and 40 degree weather when it warms up look out.
I am also running Mike Golkas platnium vapor injector

Ram air cold air hood scoop
48mm F&B
intake gasket matched only, (good low end gains)
1.7 crower rollers (mopar performance roller lifters)
MSD 6a and blaster 2 coil 42,000 volts MSD wires
Autolite AP3923 at .060
Injector sync +3
JBA headers
carsound high flow
dynomax 17748 2.5 in out
factory 2.5 mandrel tail
Jet stage 2 99501s
crank sensor +4 degree's (I have custom mount)
clutch fan removed
electric thermo fan
All Amsoil synthetics

The mods are jet recomended to gain more but not
nessasary, go right to a stage 2 chip it will
help more with more mods from the better timing
and fuel curves the comp will learn to run from
the altered signals

If your looking for a magic bullet to boost your
1/8 and 1/4 mile times the jet chip is not for you

If your looking for some solid low end torque
gains and better gas mileage and it does help
at 2500 up not a hundred hp but I would say
10 maybe 15 but the low end gains and the gas
mileage far outway the hp gains

The stage 2 chip has increased the gas mileage
on every truck we put them on within the first
few hundred miles the gains of both low end and
gas mileage are solid

I also have the black orange Bosch FMS 19#
injectors. design 2 4 hole matched 2%

When you have all the boltons and mods the
injectors show a big improvement over stock
on a stock motor no mods just a smother run

what is the part number for the robert shaw thermo and where can i get it. what do these stage 2 chips retail at? Cant budget the chip right now im sure. I will leave the crank sensor where it is. I have noticed slight pinging now since the mod. Should i try the 3923's again and put the 180 thermo in? only have the drop in filter and the crank sensor mod and fact. plugs.
if you have more info on indexing plugs i would be interested in that. I'm looking for mpg without a stage 2 chip. I still have my snows on too which are slightly taller than the 255/65's from factory. i did not want to spend the money for a snow to replace factory size so they put a 235/75 on for winter. i'm sure this changes my torque a little, maybe causing the ping, not sure. any info would be great. thanks everyone

Hi everyone,

Larry, What do you mean by indexing the plugs,

something like making them point a certain direction when installing them??

What keeps them from coming loose?

ALSO, I am having a heck of a time removing my OIL PAN I have a 97 Dodge Dakota 3.9 Magnum automatic 2 wheel drive and have done what the Haynes book says except for the thing I didn't understand had anything to do with it and that is removing the tranny pan cover??? what is that about?

I have 2 chains hooked to the front side of my engine and have lifted it nearly 4-5 inches up and I still can't get the pan to pass the tranny converter case.

Does anyone know the tricks to get this thing out.

I wanted to contact sandman but I don't know how to get in touch with him.

Also if I join, can I contact individual members directly if I need to ask something?

Best to you, Kurt

Yes try the colder plug and 180 thermo it will
stop the ping, and at least a K&N drop in filter
for better flow.

advancing the timing will raise cyl temps and presure

Jet 2 chips sell for around $200 and are vehicle
specific chips

You can buy a spark plug index washer kit with
diff thickness washers to use to get the open end
of the plug where you want it.

I just used diff wasshers from diff plugs untill
I got them indexed about 1 hour to do.
