How many miles on your dak? Have you tried changing you filter filter. How you tried giving your truck a tuneup; new rotor, cap, ignition wires, spark plugs? The problem could be a defective o2 sensor, the daks are pretty sensitive to the o2 sensor going bad. You could disconnect the wire to the o2 and start it up and take it for a short drive and see if it still stalls. If it clears up, then the o2 sensorneeds changed.

87, how 'bout checking your fuel pump relay?
It's located in the engine compartment on the driver's side. Also, what year dakota are we talking about? I'll assume it's an 87. have you checked the fuel injectors lately? When were they changed?

I've been having the same problem with mine. I've checked the whole fuel system from sending unit to carb (87's are carbed so no injectors). If you can find anything pass the info on. I've had advice on replacing the auto shutdown relay. I would but I'm out of money. It might be somewhere to start. Also if the interupter in the distributor is loose it could cause the problem. The O2 sensor is on your driver's side exhaust manifold. Dakotausa.com has a genI section that might be more helpful.

The O2 sensor is located in the exhaust befor the cat. convertor. You will see a plug with acouple of wires connected to it.

Are you having a problem with it stalling when it has rained, moisture in the air, such as high humidity? Dakotas have a problem with the distributor cap leaking. You can solve it by placing some silicone around the cap. The o2 sensor should put a check engine light on but it may not. They're kind of expensive. I believe you only have one on that truck. It should be located before the cat.

nope regular day although i will take that apart and look at that. Tomarro im tearing the hole thing apart is the best way to get my tank off and stuff by takeing my bed off or sittin under it and takeing it off that way easier? im not worried bout having man power cuz im havein some friends help. Which would be the easier way to go. Could it be possible that there is water sittin in the bottom of my tank and after driving for so long it sucked it up into the motor and bugs out. cuz u suck water into say a dirt bike it bogs rev the hell out of it and it clears out i didnt rev the hell out of my truck but reved it enough and it cleared up? thats why i want to drop my tank also check my sending unit.

If this problem does not happen until the truck is warm, than it is definitely the relay. I have had a Cherokee and a Civic do exactly what you are talking about. Dodge will change the fuel pump first, but usually it is the relay, but they don't tell you that, they just tell you they replaced it as part of the fuel pump swap, bas..rds. Anyway, the relay is under the hood. Good luck.

I do not believe that the 87 dak's have a fuel relay, they have a mechanical fuel pump located at the passenger side of the truck on the side of the engine below the pulleys and belts. The fuel relay would be used with throttlebody injection and multi port fuel injection. The fuel pump on the 87 Dakotas is "old school" technology. Try disconnecting the wire or plug from your O2 sensor, take it for a drive and see if your power returns, if so it's the O2 sensor. Gas mileage will drop like a rock when you do this, the computer uses predefined tables stored in memory. I had a 87 dak and my son had a 87 dak both carburetored, not fuel injected.

hi, the relay is located on the drivers side, in front of the master cylinder. It's a black box with a cover over it. Take the cover off and on the bottom of the cover each relay and it's relative amperage will be labeled. Try switching 2 of the relays and see if this helps first before you buy a new one, just remember which one's your switching.
If this helps solve your problem then your finished, if it doesn't switch the relays back and look for something else.

I had a fuel pump relay go out on our '91 TBI Dodge Shadow, the starter would turn but no starting, if you flipped the ignition switch a number of times, you would eventually hear the fuel pump in the tank kick on and she would start right up (thought it may have been the pump, but no, a $13 relay instead). No sputtering ever, either it would start and run fine or not start at all. An all or none type of situation, plus I don't think a carb. vehicle would have a relay as mentined by Wadak. Sounds like an O2 sensor, unplug it and see what happens. Good luck.

I ve had some problems with my dak also. It starts up fine but then it will start to start shakeing and bounceing as if it has hyrdolics. I took it in and they thought that it was the caddilac converter but it still does the same. so now were trying my fuel filter and for a tune up. i just want to know if Dak some times do these in there time?

one point in 87's second post that you all seem to have over looked, it has 200,000 on the clock . most gas engines need a major overhaul around 150,000 to 175,000, with diesel pickups going from 225,000 to 300,000 (dodge cummins thank you very much) before needing an overhaul. a gas engine that old most likely has badly worn cylinder walls and at least slightly burned valves, not to metion scored bearing journals.

I know this does answer the question but the following might. the pickup in the distributer tends to go bad and when it does it is all of a sudden and the engine "sputters out"

ya its not just a sputtering out type of thing like it will shut off. i took my bead off and got my sending unit off. lets just say that thing wasnt a pretty sit. The metal nipples on top were like rusted so bad i went to take the rubber hoses of of them and they just snaped. and the bottom fitler was pretty well clogged. Everyone seems to tell me that its the O2 sensor on here but when i talk to all the nolegible mechanics AROUND HERE NOT SAYING U GUYS ARENT and real mechanics i know in person they said that there would be no reason for it to stall cuz of that. plus the way its stallin isnt like its loseing spark. its like a loss of fuel. I already replaced the fuel pump and filter but like i said my sendin unit is in pretty bad shape. Does anyone know how much one of those goes for? Plus i will gettin the computers scanned once i get it back on the road again. IF there is any other thoughts that could be cuasing this thing to stall let me know. I also looked for that Relay. I had no luck finding it. I just got two grey/metal boxes with wires goin into them.

I think a new sending unit was $80 when I last checked. My unit was fine when I dropped my tank but I wanted to change the screen out. I went to the dealer and they said I can't just buy the screen, I'd have to buy the new sending unit all together. Don't ya love it. They wanted me to spend $80 for a $5 part.

Sorry about that. It was a while ago when I checked the price. Good luck though, taking the bed off is a lot better of an idea than trying to drop the tank. That was a pain.

Well 87dakota500 don't give up on it. Remember all vehicles have problems just some are bigger than others. Ford & Dodge tend to have less problems tho.
