Ok, I bought a lemon and blew the engine 18,000 after buying it (at 68K) and did the long block replacement already. We got it all together and now it won't start.

My repair manuel says if after putting things back together it doesnt start, or seems to have timing issues (which is what it seems) to take it to the dealership to have them connect to a special computer to reset the fuel timing... Is there a way to do this myself? I'd have no problem pulling the e-prom if I knew it would fix it.

Anyone have any ideas (battery was removed for weeks, so I'm sure any computers that could be reset by disconnecting the negative battery terminal will not work.)

Thanks

Joe

"battery was removed for weeks"

Is your battery dead now?

Does your engine crank over, just not fire?

What year (is it OBDII)?

Are you getting engine codes?

Lots o' questions for ya, too many unknowns.

Ok sorry, I was in a bit of a hurry. What I want to do is set the timing. Short of buying a computer, or taking it to the dealership is there anything I can do to reset it by my self. I guess what I'm really looking for is some way to restart the computer in a KNOWN state... such as this:

Turn crank to #1 TDC the to reset the computer, and the timing will be reset.

Battery is charged and fine. Engine cranks, but timing is so far off that it does not fire. We started off by putting #1 on TDC and putting the distributor on the position to fire at #1, but timing is still way off.

I checked for spark and fuel, its getting both, but maybe not at the right time. My Haynes manual says “if you lose the placement of the distributor the timing must be set with a computer, adjusting the distributor will not work.” I’m hoping to find a “cheat” or something.

Thanks

Joe

Are you absolutely sure about TDC = could be
180 degrees out , on exhaust stroke instead of compress ?
What year ? some use crank position sense
others just dist ?

My father and I had the valve covers off when we set it to TDC, so I'm 99% sure, unless we got the intake and exhaust mixed up.

99 Dakota 318 (oops I just realized I was in V6 forum).

There is a sensor on the flywheel assembly, we put it back in the same place it was on the old block, same with the oil pump stem, which turns the distributor.

But like the book says even with all that correct it still may not work, and I may need to take it to the dealer to have the timing reset on the computer. So what I’m looking for is a way to reset the computer to a known state (like #1 TDC). Then if it still doesn’t work I know I have other issues.

i'm pretty sure that turning the distributor only messes with the fuel injector sync.

if the computer was umplugged from the batt for an extended period, (sevral hours) its reset. if not, you just unplug the neg terminal from the batt. turn the key to she start positon for 30 seconds and its reset.
just my .02

Joe, You say you know your getting fuel? How?
Are the spark plugs wet? Did you put new injectors in the engine during rebuild or use old ones?
Check any and all of the old parts that you put back on the engine first. Set your distributor to
0 degrees, and replace the old crank sensor.
Oh, one last thing, did you check your cam timing before you put her in?
LOL on your endeavor, Tom.

try moving the dist 180 but you will need to set
the injector sync.

I figured out how to set the sync... I havent tried it yet but heres what I was told:
Joe,
If you rotate the engine to TDC on #1, then rotate a little further until the "V8" mark on the balancer is at the 0 mark on the timing pointer, then hook a voltmeter to the Cam Sensor... between the output and ground... Rotor in the dist should be pointing to Cyl #1 (towards the PCM). rotate the dist back and forth until the voltmeter changes from 0 to +5 volts, or +5v to 0... go CW past that point and slowly come back CCW until that transition happens. Tighten the Distributor hold down bolt. It should fire up... If not, verify you have spark, and you have fuel pressure... if you're missing either one, check all the grounds for the harness and PCM...
that will get you close on the fuel sync... you can drive it to the dealer and pay them to set it if you can't find someone with a scantool after that...
