Subject: Exhaust Questions V6

Hey all--
I have a few mods on my 03 Dak 3.9L V6 such as Custom Air Intake
Changed Sparks
Changed Stat
Changed Cap and Rotor

I'd like to get a bit of "balance in the system" and want to swap out the muffler for a Flowmaster.
I'm looking for a nice idle sound and a bit of a growl when I step on it, But I don't need a ground pounder (That is what the subwoofers are for ;-)

Here is my question:
Would I be better suited to do a 50 Series SUV Muffler (As the guy at Flowmaster Suggested) and use stock pipes to keep the exit at the passenger side.

OR

Go with a 70 Series, straighten the pipe and "dump" it just before the back bumper (or possibly dump on the side where stock is?)

Which would be Louder of these 2 set ups? Louder doesn't neccesarily mean better to me. But I wanted to inquire.
Thanks boys!

Amy

What kind of custom air intake do you have and where did you get it? Sorry I'm not helping with the exhaust thing but I have the same year, etc. as you and would like to know

How old are you honey? You'll never get yourself a woman being so anxious... ;-)

I'm still waiting for some exhaust answers though.

Amy, if your poing to put a performance muffler on your truck, go with what they recommended. I have 2 Dodge Dakotas with the big block 70 series, low restriction and slightly louder than stock with a low rumble to it. The v8 Dak sound pretty mean with 70 series. My son has the 40 series on his truck, it makes his v6 sound like a v8, but very loud outside and inside the cab. The 50 series can be loud when you really accelerate very hard. Just my thoughts.

Wadak-
Ok so if I put the Flowmaster 70 on my V6 with exit pipes it sounds as if it may be enough for what I'm looking for. But....

How much louder would it be if I dumped the 70 back by the bumper?

I have the same question as Amy. I have been back and forth on this subject many times. Have V6, Intake, PowerChip, Plugs, Wires, Cap, Rotor. Want a nice sound. Know the 40 is the loudest and so on. Looked at 40 delta single in/dual out. Is what I'm looking at good, or no? Any suggestions are great, thanks.

Matt

i was back and forth on the subject also but i got the 40 series on my v6 5 speed and love it! it isn't even lound in the cab?! i was very surprised, i actually wanted it louder but when i get on it it's definetely there. my recommendation is to get the 40 series and dump it if you want it to be any louder but try to just replace the stock first it may be loud enough for you. later

The guy at Flowmaster said if you don't increase pipe size you can run duals without losing any torque (this is hotly contested though)

I'm simply looking to go single in-single out.

If your going to run duals, keep the pipe size below 2.25" If you stick with single, 2.5" should be your largest.

Amy, if you used the 70 series out to the back bumper, it will be slightly louder than stock. My dak exits all the back by the back bumper but exits to the side like the stock exhaust. If you run out the way out to the bumper, it will be still slightly louder than stock. it all depends on what you want.

Hey Now!! After learning from my own mistake, I'd say go w/ what the flowmaster guy suggested the 50s SUV.use the stock tailpipe or have a new one bent for you. stock is the easiest 'cause of the hangers
I have the gibson SS 3 inch single system.I don't care for it now but I must live w/ it for a long time 'cause it's stainless.

dumping i was talkin about dumpin the exhaust right after the muffler with a turn down, it will make the truck sound deeper beucase it would echo off the ground then resonate ?sp? from the bed making sum good noise :) and to answer ur other ? im 19 and im just tryin to see what the female dak drivers look like :). dumpin the exhaust at the bumper would not make that much of a diffrence alittle deeper but not by much. a single inlet muffler and a duel outlet wont make u lose low end and if u do it would not be noticable at all. just dont put a 3" pipe from the cat to the muffler have the exhaust shop just put a adapter on it and ur good to go, u may not gain as much hp as u would with a single in/out but u wont notice anyhthing

Well I think I'm going to go with the 70 series, straighten the pipe and do a turn down at the back bumper. Should give me the rumble I need without it being so loud I compete with the stereo.

And Hey, sometimes I do like to just drive without any music at all and just listen to the truck with the windows down.

I also have a 2003 3.9. with a few mods., JBA 8.0mm wires, MSD
replacement coil, 180 stat, k&N replacement air filter and the super chip.

I am from Puerto Rico. I am trying to get the cap and rotor locally but have not found yet.
I know I can get thru the net. I was
wondering, where did you get your cap and rotor?

Rene
