Subject: Tranny Thump???
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a brand new stock 2003 dakota sport, 3.9l and 5 speed manual, every so often when getting on the truck, there is a loud thud/pop/bang? type noise when I am letting (read dumping) the clutch, seriously though I am not dumping it like racing someone, just merging into traffic or something like that, normal everyday conditions. Is this normal break in, me getting used to the new truck/tranny, or should I pay a visit to the dealership before it's too old to be a brand new off the lot truck? (about 1500k and 3 weeks of ownership right now) Thanks in advance for anyone who can help. Buy the way, is mostly in 2nd gear, and sometimes in 3rd. maybe once in 4th? never 1st, never by the time in need my 5th. Thanks again

It was sugested to me that this thud is caused by gas hitting the side/back/front of the tank after a jolt, while this is logical and I will definitly try to consider this as the explination, it just doesn't sit right... please if anyone else has any ideas or has had this happpen please offer me some advice... Thanks

The exact same thing happens in my truck. I have a 5 spd. 2003 Dakota SXT, and I noticed about a month after I had it I heard the "thump" sound. For me it seems if I don't let the clutch out somewhat perfect then it will thump. And this is regular driving too, I'm not pounding on it. Happens between 1st and 2nd. So what I do is make sure I time it right time every time I shift and there is no thump. I have no idea what is causing it though.
