i think that the bushings in my shifter have gone, i can move the shifter left and right ( a lot) i have a 99 dakota 3.9 4x4 anyone have a clue what to do, and if you how hard it is.

Usually the nylon coating wears off the shift forks causing that problem. The fix is to replace the forks.
