Subject: Exhaust effects on torque
IP: Logged

Message:
I hoping someone could explain to me how and why a very low back pressure echaust system has a negative effect on low end torque...

Also, I have heard quite a few people saying that their CAI sounds great. How exactly does the intake make any sound?

Thanks,

J-Man

The stock intakes have a ribbed tube going into the throttle body. Some cold air intakes don't use that tube (which is designed to quiet the incoming air) and so when the engine is cold, it'll hiss while the IAC is open to help the engine warm up. It may also do that if you use a much better flowing filter. You also will notice your engine sounds different if you punch it when driving down the road and it hits the higher RPMs cuz you can hear the air being sucked in much better. My intake growls at WOT (wide open throttle) and also has a very noticeable hiss when my engine is cold...but I don't have a CAI. I got a 10" round air cleaner that sits right on top the tb. Prolly no performance gains since I don't have a ram air hood, but it looks cool:)

Oh yeah...and my best info on the back pressure. Our trucks need so much back pressure in order to have the low end torque that they were designed to have. If you put a low back pressure system on it, it doesn't have the needed amount of back pressure and therefore loses torque. Sorry I can't describe it better.

Thanks, that helps. I noticed that whistling sound you were talking about after I ported my TB and cleaned up my IAC. It was very loud at first, but after the comp adjusted it just sounds like rushing air now, but much quieter.

i like the hissing sound. It sounds really cool if i turn the radio down and tap the pedal, makes a really loud hiss like a pop bottle being opened.

ditto on the exhaust i have herd that single outlet exhaust is best for our v6 (or single in dual out muffler) 2.5 inch pipes
