I know companies say they improve performance. but has anyone accually installed a 180 thermo. and noticed performance gains and gas mileage? I thought they just opened and closed, how does this improve performance? Thanks

In addition to those questions, how does a 180 t-stat help? it opens sooner, but it's up to the coolant and radiator to do the work and keep it cool, so how does this help?

Best power and best emissions occur at different temps. Naturally, the best emissions settings come from the factory, but the computer still makes best power at 183 degrees. Also, the few degrees buffer this provides eliminates over 90% of the coolant pocketing which helps provide more consistent cylinder head temps by keeping the fluid moving and not locked out by steam. Aside from extra power, you also reduce the chance pinging, which totally destroys power and will damage an engine over time.

Another question.

It seems that from gen1dak's response that changing the thermo can change the emission output of the truck. How much does this change (if it does)? I live in Atlanta and we have emission checks yearly. If I get a 180 thermo (as I am planning on doing) does the truck stand a chance to fail emission tests?

As long as everything is working right sensors
especialy the o2 or o2's depending on year yes
they will still pass an emisions test

The computers were desighed to make max hp at
182 to 187 degrees

Just be sure you get a good 180 thermo the
el-chepo's open to soon and run cold

super stant
robert shaw
Jet low temp

You will also need to tune your plugs by gap and
maybe even drop 1 heat range untill they run a
nice tan color

This brings your cyl and plug temp for the best
burn and makes it easier for the comp to control
the air fuel mixture and than you will see both
performance and mileage improvements

To hot or to cold and you will never see good
performance or mileage, its the first thing you
need to do on these computer controled motors

I am running a 92 V6 in my 95 4X4 and getting 21
mpg with all the usual bolt ons stock rockers to
be changed back to the 1.7's soon and than it may
even be better if I can keep my foot out of it

Larry, when you are using the 180 thermostat, what kind of plugs and ignition do you recommend??? I noticed you said a step lower, so what brand and gap would you recommend with this...

Thanks,
Greg

The Autolite or the new champ gold plat tip run
good with a stock ign at .040 .045

Autolite AP3923
Champ same # as stock plug only 11 heat range
there gold series, plat tip only.

Have been testing these 2 plugs and both run great
in these motors with a slightly wider gap
