I have a 92, v6 dakota. When I start it and rev it some, then try to put it into drive it stalls. It does this also when I am in alot of stop and go traffic. Then to get it started again, I have to hold the pedal to the floor and turn the ignition, but the second it goes into gear it stalls. It seems it is flooding and I have black smoke. Any suggestions? I tried pulling up the fault code, but keep getting 12 and 55. Not much help.

It sound like a bad oxygen sensor, they should be replace about every 60,000 miles. One of the symptoms is black smoke out the tail pipe, its runnig to rich, pumping more gas through the injectors than is needed. Another thing that will after affect the smooth running at idle is a thing called the IAC-Idle air controller. It is black connected to the back side of the throttlebody facing the firewall in the engine compartment. How many miles on your pickup?

Go to this site and cut and paste the link into your browser and look under the how-to's. It will have pictures along with the information on how the IAC sensor should be cleaned:

Dakota has around 171,000 miles....
It now pulls code #17, which says the engine is running too cool, coolant temp sensor. Could this be the problem? I heard there are two sensors for this, is this correct?

Theres only one coolant temp sensor. It is located next to the thermostat housing. There is also an air temp sensor. It is located on the passenger side of the vehicle. It is on the intake manifold. Find your #2 fuel injector.(the first one on the passenger side of the vehicle,by the fan)and look straight up,you should see it.

If you have had the transmission fluid changed recently GET IT OUT!! I found out the hard way that dextron III will trash a dodge transmission and have mine out on the floor right now. The dextron tears up the bands and clutches and the debris stays in suspension and freezes up the torque converter lockdown selenoid to stay locked. The stall is the same thing that happens when you pop the clutch on a standard transmission at idle.Use only ATF+3 or ATF+4.

A bad O2 sensor will trip a code 51 or 52. A bad MAP sensor, however, will exhibit these symptoms without showing a code.

The code 17 is a separate issue, stuck thermostat, but this can also make the truck run a little richer, however, not to this extent.

This is not a transmission problem.

I had this problem once and i found that there are two wires that are screwed into the drivers side wheel well for a ground and mine just wasnt staying tight, when it was loose the truck wouldn't stay running more than a few seconds if it would start at all. I fixed it by cutting the ends off of both wires and ran them together to the negative side of the battery. I dont know if this is your problem or not but it couldnt hurt to look at it.
