Subject: Tranny and Mileage?

Message:
.....Well my tranny took a dump last saturday and it is in the shop being rebuilt....i did notice...that when my truck shifted from first to second it shifted at always around 53-5400 rpms...is this too high and has it exceeded the powerband on my truck? By fixing or rebuilding the tranny will it shift at 5k or will it be the same...?
.....Another question is that the rpms at 50 were at 1600 or + rpms....it has been as low as 1400 but i dont know where it is supposed to be at and would this be my tranny? And my gas mileage is bad i have had the best of 14.5 with the tranny before it completely wiped out? What the deal and are these problems connected with my tranny?

Shifting at 5400 is way way way way way too high. Did the TV cable fall off?

Please say it ain't at double eh em see oh.

If you have 31" tires, 3.55 gears 1600@50 sounds about right in OD.

How can you shift that high when the rev limiter
is at 4800 on a 94

I would say your tack is off but at 50 with 3.55
at 1400 is normal 1600 at 50 reading high if off
200 at 1400 rpm at 2800 it would read 400 high
and at redline 600 that would explain the 53
5400 rpm you are seeing.

Not to worrie though the factory gauges are never
very acurate close but not right on

peak HP on a stock camed 3.9 is 4400 and most
computers will shift at 4200 unless it is stomped
to the floor than it will hold right to the limit
speed

LOL Mike want better gas mileage, keep your foot
out of it LOL But I know its a hard thing to do
I have the same problem with my old lead foot and
its a hard habit to break if even posible, I have
been trying for 40 years with no luck and even had
to replace mt throttle cable for the 3rd time now
streaching from my lead foot.

LOL there is just no hope for guys like us unless
there is a cop following us all the time and
sometimes that will not stop me, thaN the cops
come to the shop and give me a hard time and
laugh about it

carrie on and have fun..!!!

Mike you should have them install the TransGo
shift kit as long as the trans is out TFOD 518
$100 and about 1 hour to instal considering the
valve body is already out

It will firm up the shifts make them quicker with
less slipage and heat buildup and the trans will
hold up a lot better and last longer

the computer controlls the rpm cutout it does not
matter what the redline shows on the tach its
set in the comp to cut IGN at a certian speed

Defenitly consider the shift kit they really help
these transmissions run strong and last longer

Not that hard but you need to remove the valve
body to install the shift kit.

It will be fine without the kit untill you can
afford to do it,

A good time would be at your first filter and
fluid change.

The TransGo kit comes with a VHS vidio to watch
befor you do the actual work.

The worst part is poping the park rod back in
when you put the valve body back up and in you
need to just line it up and give it a nice hard
push and it will pop in.

Its sort of like a ball stud set up in a throttle
cable where the rod pops in.

usualy about 4 hours taking your time and
following the instructions.

TCI also makes a very nice kit for these
transmissions they include a little better
instructions and also the modulator blocker rod
to firm up the shifts even better than the transgo
kit.

I will be using 1 in the next trans I do, I have
1 here on the shelf just waiting for a customer
who wants a shift kit

Here is the # and an instruction page so you can
see what is involved in putting the kit in

I will hopefully have enough money to actually buy the shift kit or since a LSD it too expensive i will try to find one at salvage yard.

Ya mike that is what I did got 2 3.91 rears from
the bone yard and bolted them in. The rear was
a sure grip

Paint jobs are not cheap these days the paint
alone is like $500 these days base and clear coat

Have your dad check out the shift kit they are not
that hard to install just take your time and
follow the directions

They are well worth the time and money and will
make the trans a lot stronger due to less lag
time between shifts less slipage and heat build
up. Heat is what kills transmissions and a smoth
shift does nothing but build heat engauging the
cluth packs slow alowing slippage and heat buildup
