Hi larry, If you don't mind me asking, what rpm does the 3.9L engine run on level ground at a constant speed of 70 or 75 with the 727 trans (3 speed)

Thanks,
David

Depends on the gears

mine ran someplace between 2700 and 3000.

That looks like 3.21 or 3.23 with a 3 speed

thanks! that is a good article. I have looked at other boards and this one is way ahead of any others with a lot of practical ways to mod your engine and solve problems. Most of this is due to your excellent advice.

If you dont mind me asking another question, will the engine last on a 8 hour trip with the rpm's runing at 3000. I forgot to tell you its an 87 and it runs like brand new. Plus it has 220,684k miles on it. it does good when I drive it on 2 hour trips runing somewhere between 65 and 70

P.s. Thanks Smoht & Larry for answering my other question.

David

david, yes it will last. I ran a 9.5 hour trip in mine about 3 months ago when my dad blew out his tranny in tenn. Running 85+ and it still runs fine. Considering you'll probably be stopping off and on for 5-10 minutes it'll do good, no worries. =)

Hey Will or Larry or Smoht my 87 dakota runs bad when the choke is on it tries to stall and when I press the gas the engine acts like its skipping or the timing is bad or something. What is causing this and what to do about it?

There is a small vac pot on the side called a
choke pull off that goes bad.

Replace it and adjust so it pulls the choke open
aprox 1/4 inch when started cold.

or the vac line is broke

the pot and the lines are good but I think its running a little rich because it blows out black dust or smoke when I press it hard with the choke on, I think it needs a tune up too. but after it warms up it run great! Do I need to hook my egr system back up. I think the truck sounds better without the rumble of the egr thats why I took it apart.

Thanks for the info. Before I was web savy, I went and complained about the pinging in my 3.9l They did the PCM update, which of course did not fix the problem. Is there any way they can put it back to the original, since it seems the update does more harm than good? Thanks,

Shawn
