Message:
I have a 1992 Dakota with a 3.9 and a Magnaflow muffler.

I recently went down and got turndowns put on it right after the muffler to make it sound better. Before, there was about 4 feet of pipe going way over the rear axle and out the back.

It seems a lot more sluggish on the low end. But if I am going around 25 and stomp it to where it drops into first at 4000-4500rpm, it will throw you back in your seat.

So, I guess I gained top end and lost bottom end. As far as racing goes, did this make the truck slower overall? I lose a LOT of time starting off just trying to get it up to 2500-3000 rpm.

Another question is about the thermostat. I have a 160 degrees therm and my IAT is in the intake. It is around 40 degrees out. Will I notice an improvement if it warms up to 65-70?

Thanks!

You need to up that thermostat to a 180. 160 won't let your truck warm up enough to go into a closed loop...which means you will actually probably notice a decrease in performance. Our truck engines were designed to run best at 185*F...which is about the temp where a 180*F thermo will open. That also might be why all your low-end has gone...not sure. What size pipes you running on your exhuast? Anything over 2.5" could also cause you to lose low-end torque.

Cool...I'll stick a 180 degree in there.

After driving for 30 minutes, it still only gets a hair off the C (cold).

The exhaust is 2.25". I think that by cutting off all the pipe after the muffler, I reduced the backpressure.

Thanks
