i'm getting a sort of rythmic ticking noise from my engine. i can here it at start up only when it's cold and it gets a little louder as i accelerate through first gear. above 3500rpms i can't here it in 1st gear, and i barely catch it in the bottom of second. when it's warm i doesn't seem to make much noise, if any. it seams to be more prominent on the pass side of the engine bay, and almost sounds a little "ratchetty(sp?)". my only guesses are valve noise, or injector tick(although, wouldn't i here that at high rpms too?).

could be your timing chain, but those tend to rattle more than tick mainly only at idle as well. There is a apdated chain and tenioner package that fixes this problem from dodge but I think I would go out and buy a good double roller and put it in.

I had the same ticking noise on the passenger side and it turned out to be the PCV valve. It made a lot more noise when it was cold. Start the truck and pull the valve out to check it.

yep, it's the pcv valve. so what's that, a couple bucks from the dealer? anyhow, thanks for the replies fellas. also, i still think the actual ticking sound i'm getting is injectors. it seems like the #3 injector is overly loud. pull em and clean em? take em in for cleaning/balancing? thanks again guys.

A clean injector will make a ticking noise. Dirty ones are quiet.

Try a can of Techron (from your local Chevron station) first and see if that clears up the noise.

yeah, i know injectors tick but either the 1 or 3 injector is REALLY LOUD. i'll try to find some of that techron, although not too many chevrons around here. anyhow, thanks bernd. btw, just for refference, what kind of mods are available for our fuel system? mostly in the area of injectors and rails. TIA

I have had a knocking in my engine at start up, idle, and at low speeds. I thought that the higher the RPMs went up, the noise would go away, but it actually just knocked faster. When I first brought it to the dealer they said it was a normal sound. Then I brought it back on MLK day and I haven't seen my truck since, lol. They are putting a refurbished engine. They finally found out that the knocking was a piston rubbing the sleeve, or something like that. Check your pistons if your noise persists.
