HOW MANY MILES ON YOUR TRUCK? There is a good chance you have a bad O2 sensor. It a sensor located inthe exhaust right before the catalytic convertor. It will have a plug with one or two wires connected to it. You can disconnect the plug from the O2 sensor and start up the truck, take it for a short drive and see if you power comes back up and idles smoother. When you disconnect the sensor the computer relies on a preset value stored in it. This may help you out. The Gen 1 Daks, like your should have the O2 sensor replaced every 50 or 60 thousand miles to prevent these drivability problems. Use the search function and look for Diane's 88 she had an almost identical problem, turned out to be the O2 sensor.

seems like I recall it being 7/8 ths, Dianne changed hers with a crescent wrench. When I changed mine I let it soak in pb-blaster for about 30 minutes and it came right out.

I guess my question is i have never owned a Dodge before and i am looking to buy a 1987 Dodge Dakota , v6, 4x4. Is this a pretty good truck as far as putting miles on it? It has 104,000 now...I hoping to get maybe 50,000 to 60,000 more out of it. Does this truck, that you know of, have a pretty good reliabilty rating?

You should be able to get that out of it...for an 87, that's pretty low mileage. A lot of people here have had their trucks go over 200,000+.

Doug,
Get the Dak!
I'm not sure of your location but, I paid just over a grand for my Dak, but I kinda robbed them, LOL. Anyway, I think you should be able to get them down a bit. Mine is an 88 and had 109000 on it when I got it. My truck would have been well worth a couple grand.
Good Luck!

The Gen-1's will run along time if you properly maintain them. They are not the fastest truck in the world, I know of a guy here in Washington who used a Gen 1 dak as a parts delivery and put about 350,000 miles on his before selling it. Much of the driving was stop and go, it was maintained well and it served it's owner well. Another benefit of using a MSD system on your vehicle, it can help to prolong the life of it. The better combustion achieved should help to reduce contaminants that build up in the oil. I have noticed it takes longer for the oil in my dak to turn dark.

Hey Diane,
Thanks for the input. I will be buying this truck tomorrow...What would you say a fair price to haggle for is? I see you got a pretty good deal...This truck is located in Pennsylvania so the supply and demand for a 4x4 is necessary due to the snow....That is why it is listed for 2,000.00 i guess. I will try to haggle for 1,700, maybe 1,800.00 dollars. Oh the truck is in great shape also not a hint of rust anywhere and it does not have a single dent on it!!!

Good luck Doug.
You should of coarse try to haggle a bit, if he's asking 2 and you have the cash in hand, he may take 1700 to 1800. If he won't come down, it sounds well worth 2000. I've had to replace some sensors and stuff, just got mine the beggining of Dec. But everything I've had to do was pretty much normal maintanace stuff and helped me get to know my dak better. My truck was taken care of pretty good to. Only rust is a little on the very bottom edge of my tail gate.
Good luck! Will be waiting to hear all about it.

These are good little trucks and easy to work on. Most parts aren't that expensive compared to others in my experiance. For example, I had to replace a O2 sensor, $60. But, that is something that has to be replaced on most vehicles at regular intervals, every 60,000 or so. I also replaced the Engine coolant temperature senson, it was I around $23. And the distributor. I won't lie to you, do a search on my name you can read all about the problems I first encountered. Thing is and I believe had a lot to do with mine was it sat for a year and 6 mos only being driven about 5 times. That is harder on them then driving them everyday. Also, if and when you have problems, there are so many great people on this site that will do all they can to help you figure out the problems if and when they come.
Just have to remember that no vehicle is perfect and they all need repairs here and there. Changing oil regularly and doing tune ups when due sure prolong the life of any motor. And, as far as I'm concerned, Dodges can take a lot of abuse and still treat you right.

Have you already test drove the truck?
You'll know when you drive it if it's right for you or not.
This is probably gonna sound stupid, but I bought my truck on eBay. No picture even and a very small description. I emailed the person asking questions and sent a picture asking, Does it look like this? When I found out what I wanted to know and that it looked almost identical to the pic I emailed, I knew it was my truck before I even bid on it. I'm that way about vehicle tho and a lot of people are. Guess what I'm being windy at saying is, If it feels right to you, go for it, if your having to many doubts, maybe it's not the truck you really need or want.
Reply back, Diane

Diane,
Thanks for repling to my request so quickly! you get 110% satisifation rating from me...I noticed you write alot and refer alot of information for those in need...That is great to hear because i will probably need some great advice and help in the future. Primarly this truck will be for house projects, taking my dogs for a ride and hunting so i will not be driving it all the time. But finding this website makes me believe that no matter what problem that i may run into it will be able to be solved do to you and others who are willing to provide there past experience good and bad with there DAKS. The best part about it is it is free!!! Usually to just get some advice from a dealer or to have the vehicle looked at cost approx 50-70.00. SO I JUST WANT TO SAY WHO EVER OWNS THIS SITE IF THEY EVER NEED A DONATION OF ANY KIND TO KEEP THIS SITE RUNNING IM IN!!!! Thanks Diane for your input so far i am sure i will be talking with you on a weekly/monthly basis. I will let you know how everything goes tomorrow when i purchase the Dak.
