raced my buddies 2004 ranger edge 2wd with the 4.0L in it.

and got a whooping put on me by at least a truck and a half. and boy did the dodge bashing begin.

his truck is completely stock, had way to much low end to even compete.

once I hit 70mph and 3 gear kicked in then I was finally able to start making ground. But was un-able to catch him in time before he hit 90 and was limited. I bet those 4.0L give the v8 daks a headache.

damn it, not the fasted v6 in town any more ;(.
where's the 100 shot and my programmer LOL.
We will line them up again this weekend.
Cant loose to a blue oval.

a lot of those rangers with the 4.0 have 3.73 or 4.10 gears from the factory... they can get going pretty fast.

I can hear you out sicminds....I raced a 5
speed 97 Ford F-150 R/C SWB and 4.10
gears....and god dam i got whooped.....it was
quite emabarassing in fact but i had to ask
him what gears he had and sure enough
there way better than mine.....dam thing was a
bullet....i punched at 20 and he had it in first
and i punched it first and he was gaining on
me rather quickley and passed me when he
hit second and damn he posi-chirped like hell
two...i asked him if it was stock from the
factory and he ignored me....O well at least my
truck looks better than his! : )

lol, thats the same thing i was telling him, atleast mines better looking!

Intense i will have to look into the gears, but
he thought he had 3.55's. Or do the rangers
not even come with 3.55's?

Hey sicminds i dont think that 3.55 will fit his
case cause i think its just for dodge(i maybe
wrong) but 4.11's chevy wont fit with already
existing 4.10's dodge...but again i maybe
wrong so ford might be different and have
something like 3.70's or something of that
nature

And with the 4.0 you can get either 3.55's, 3.73's or 4.10's in the Rangers per the Ford website. With the 3.0 the latter 2 are the only options.

I know it's no consolation to you but I'm wondering about the new 3.7 vs. the 4.0...

If I'm not mistaken, I believe the 4.0 Ford has tuned intake system on it. You were not only out geared but prolly out motored too.

what do you mean by tuned intake system?

I tuned my pcm today with the superchips tuner
and can definitely feel a difference. I think its all I will need to get him now.

I am also looking into a gear change, since I mostly do city driving and barely and highway. But i also am looking at the differnce in MPG if i was to do a gear change. Still just looking.

The Magnum intakes are tuned as well, just to a different rpm range. Besides, you have a heavier truck. Granted, that doesn't matter when you lose, so break out the mods!

its all in good fun, plus i am always down for picking up some hp. Plus, I have always had the fastest v6 out of my friends and beat a lot of there v8's.

hey
larry suggest the tach adapter because without it the pcm with never fully learn the mod, making it useless.

Maybe "tuned" is not the right term rather a "2 stage" intake system controlled by the PCM. There are a set of butterflies that open a second set of runners in the intake manifold at a preset higher rpm ( usually around 4 or 5 grand). This allows the engine to breath better in upper RPM yet when the butterflies close manifold port velocity is increased to help drivability and low end torque. It's kind of like PCM controlled manifold swap on the fly. I know the 3.9 has it just not sure if it carried over to the 4.0, have'nt had a chance to look at one yet.

I have a 87 Dakota 3.9 and I think it's a great truck, it has 200,000 km's and I'm looking to get another one. This time a newer one with fuel injection, 3.9, auto, 4x4, shortbox. I want the old body style, not the new type. What year did they add fuel injection, was it FE throtle body? also when did they add a 4 speed auto? Thanks guys!Sean
