Hello,

I checked in the search but didnt find anything definate on this.. here is my scenario

Starting in late summer every now and again I would have trouble start my 98 V6 Dakota up after a good rain, thought OK, must be a cracked Distrubutor, I need to fix that (and forgot as usual). it would eventually start, and when I would give it gas it would run kind of rough especially just before shifting gears it seemed (automatic). Since then my Cat went out (replaced under warranty luckily).

This morning, after a all day Freezing rain Ice event I didnt use my truck at all. Late last night I went to go out wouldn't start, too dark to do anything woke up this morning still no start would turn over but like it had no spark (battery is 2 months old) I started to check my plugs and wires the back driver side plug (all the way back up in there) was wet on the outside of the wire.. after trying to start it several times and smelling the fuel from the fuel pump I came in and got some paper towels, pushed them around the wet plugs wire.. after a few minutes the truck started but sluggishly let it run for awhile and took it out.. it was rough around the shift points as it was before.. Thinking OK same problem.. thought it would go away after 3-5 minutes as usual, needless to say I take it out later and now it starts but at stop and when giving it a good amount of gas it shakes like hell
the check engine light was going on and off so I brought it home and shut it off the light is on permant now and I cant for the life of me do the ignition on and off 3 times while in neutral to get it to give me the code..

any Ideas? BTW the truck has 93k miles on it and I bought it used to my knowledge the wires are the original as well as the cap/rotor.. think I am screwed or think its the plugs and wires?

Mosture will effect bad plug wires replace them
and see what happens. A bad coil will also do that

Disconect the batt and hold the key to start for
30 secs, now reconect the batt and start the truck
let it run for a while than shut off and check the
codes.

This will make the computer run off the default
tables and you should than be able to pull any
troubble codes

ok, will do I just had to run to the store and while it was a little rough it certainly was not like it was earlier check engine light still on but just a mild studder at the redlight.

to check the codes (make sure i am doing it right) I put the truck in neutral turn it on, off ,on off, and on again right (not actually starting the truck though)

I think 98's are the only year you have to use a scanner on to get the codes...

on, off ,on off, on off 3 times than on, Not
starting the truck

some you also need to push the trip mileage button

If for some reason you can not retrive the codes
find a autozone they will scan for trouble codes
