Well it finally happened, my timing chain broke on the way to work. It kinda felt like it was running out of gas. Did some extra damage too. Ruined the heads. The pistons appear to be ok.
more later,
daveo.

Sorry to hear it. Mines making a rattling sound, but I made an agreement with my dad(since he says wait til it breaks then fix it, even though I told him folks say it can cause excess damage). He has a 92 (as do I, my dak is at 145k)Chevy full size 350 w/175000 miles. So i told him I wont change mine til it breaks unless his does damage to his truck

How many miles did you get out of the original timing chain?

I Know all trucks are not the same but I had a S-10 and I had it 4 years (got it new) and it had about 75,000 on it and the timming chain broke and my mustang had 95,000 on it when it broke. They just shut off. I wal lucky both times and it and it didn't hurt anything.

I had a timing belt either slip loose or break on a 87 pathfinder and that caused the valves to be bent. Hopefully that isn't the case with these engines. I wouldn't wait for it to break though b/c its gonna be cheaper to just replace it now while you are still running...... jmo

I changed my timing chain at around 105,000. It was rattling and when i revealed it i could move the chain back and forth about an inch and a half. I had to turn the cam back with my hand to re-align it. If i were you i would take the 5 hours to change it, its really not that hard. but if i were you i would replace it with a double roller chain like i did, dont bother dickin around with them stock peices of crap.. did it all for about 70 bucks and 5 hours.

Whatever you do, try to change it before it breaks!! It's gonna cost me alot more now.

Joe, I had 148,000 miles on the original chain, so I guess that is pretty good.
