I have a 94 cc 2wd. The transmission has decided to drop 1st and reverse. I have asked local advice and all I get is replace it or spend $2200 to get it rebuilt. I have never tore a tranny apart but am willing to save some dollars. I am considering rebuilding it myself and adding a shift kit. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Sounds like the low reverse band.

could just be the band or the planitary gear
cluster

These transmissions are almost identical to the
old mopar 904 and no special tools needed to
rebuild them, snap ring plyers

$2200 is way to much you can buy rebuilts for
$1200 to $1400

Don't know where your located but you can contact
michigain automatics and get a price

Thanks for the info. I am apprehensive but would attempt to do it my self to save the dollars. I am located in northeast Missouri, Michigan would be a little out of the way

Rebuilding transmissions is, i guess, easy, but If this is a truck you will need as a daily driver, I don't know about rebuilding it yourself... the simplest things done slightly wrong can throw the whole thing off, if your confident, go for it... otherwise, you might wanna buy a rebuilt one. Good luck either way.

Any suggestions on where to go to get a good rebuild kit. I can get one from O'Reilly, it has bands and clutches. They told me it would have everything that I would need. Around here if you talk about rebuilding a tranny people just shake their head and ack like it is impossible. Thanks.

Good luck bud, been there & done that! I got the kit from O'reilly's. It's a "Soft" rebuild kit, Clutches & O-Rings.

Your problem sounds like the Sprag Bearing Disentigrated (mine did same thing).

Here are 2 excellent & cheap sources for your tranny parts.

www.bulkpart.com (for rebuild manuals & parts)
www.phoenixhardparts.com ($1050 for waranteed tranny)

Months of scroungin the internet these are the 2 cheapest places I found.

I don't recommend attempting a "Do-it-yourself" unless you got shop access & a press. The rear OD housing has to be pressed to get the center shaft back in, Major P.I.A! and these tranny's are freakin HEAVY!

After 5 attempts @ Do-It-Myself.... My tax return $$ is going to PhoenixHardParts and get it over with.

Every time it's been something different w/My tranny (A500) & i've already put at least $1k into it! now the reverse went out again, when I pulled the tranny pan there are little chunks of the Sprag bearing in the pan again! grrrrrrrr.

Remember, when you order a Re-Build Kit, You get what you pay for. O'Reilly has a cheap kit but your not gonna get the parts you need.

Hope you got better luck~!

Ask him how many sheets of plywood he can haul?
