i was checking my oil today and on the whole dip stick there was a white grease, rusty, oil looking color. it doesnt appear to be water in it. i was wondering if anyone else has seen this. it could just be that the tube got a lil water and rusted but i thought id ask around just incase it happened to anyone else. thanks

I HAVE HAD THE SAME ON MINE SINCE LAST MAY. I HAVE 165,000KMS ONA 2WD V6.

I AM TERRIFIED TO GET A QUOTE AS TO THE COST FOR AN ENGINE REBUILD OR THE GASKETS REPLACED.

ANYONE HAVE ANY IDEAS OR SUGGESTIONS OTHER THAN GETTING THE GASKETS DONE.

THE SLUDGE IS MINIMAL AND SOMETIMES ABSENT.

I CHANGE THE OIL AND FILTER WITH QUAKERSTATE 10W30 EVERY 5000K'S

MY DRIVING IS SHORT APPROS 10KM TRIPS TO WORK AND BACK.

THIS ALL STARTED WHEN A DEER JUMPED IN FRONT OF ME (SO I TOLD THE INS COMPANY). i ONLY LOST A RAD, GRILL AND PASS LIGHT HOUSING.??

THERE APPEARS TO BE NO COOLANT LOSS.

WOULD THERE BE A SMELL TO THE EXHAUST IF THERE WAS A COOLANT LEAK TI THE INSIDE OF THE ENGINE??

Ok, here's my thoughts....

If you are noticing no coolant loss, it may be such a small internal leak. BAD

OR, Dodge may have used the old GM "non-vented" dipstick design, where moisture from the atmosphere gets trapped in the tube and causes the whiteness. OK

If it's being burnt, you can usually put your hand over the exhaust, smell it. If it's sweet smelling, it has coolant being burnt (green coolant, not sure if the orange smells this way)
and excessive white smoke indicates anti-freeze being burnt. hard to tell in the winter.

best bet, get it pressure tested, check the oil regularly.

I would recommend changing the oil and having an oil analysis performed for $20. Then you'll know exactly what is going on with the oil.

Well, A friend of mine had a ford F-150 with a strait six. We where out doing field work 100 miles from nowhere (in Arkansas), and it started acting funny. He opened the oil cap and there was white froth everywhere. There was water all in the oil. We had to change it out there on a dirt road. Luckly he had a spair 3 quarts and it lasted till we got into town. The problem: a seal in the engine had gone bad after 165,000 miles. It was a simple 5.00 part that almost ruined his motor.

sometimes, it's the intake manifold gasket that goes bad, causing the coolant/oil to mix - not too bad to get fixed, shadetrees can do this repair about $30-50 for parts/oil/anti

The head gasket can go bad also, causing the same condition - or a warped head - this is a real bad thing. Water, when compressed real fast (like by a piston) has the chance of freezing and breaking the block! This repair is a little more expensive, as more disassembly is needed.

definitely get this fixed before you smoke a engine.

** story for ya...
72 chevy nova, 350, I was running the freeway, being a smartazz next to a mustang, we both punched it - I toasted that gt, but at 95, head gasket went, huge white smoke and shut down.
had it towed home, tore it apart, found a big old crack in the cylinder wall. the extra liquid in the cylinder had caused the pressure to build and split right through the walls. hence NEW ENGINE. sh*t.

same car, had the intake gasket slip after installing new motor, turned the oil to milkshake. I fixed the gasket, changed the oil 3 times and all was well.

* a little white on the dipstick with no coolant loss, worry but not panic.

** a lotta white , panic!

email me if ya need to, let me know exacts.
