I have a 1989 Dakota v6 4x4 with the 3.9 tbi engine, and a 1992 Dakota v6 4x4. Im wondering if I can swap heads and fuel injection system from the 1992 Dakota Magnum 3.9 onto the 1989 3.9. I have the entire magnum engine and computer, but the engine is blown.

Also, Im wondering if these engines have the same engine block, So i can put the 1989 engine in the 1992.

Thanks,
Where did u find information on how to do it?
And are the blocks the same? Does the new block have more sensors than the old one? And what about the alternator, water pump, and power steering belts, how do those fit?

Different belt system (v-belts vs Serpentine), so the accessory drives mount differently. Note, the water pump and fan on the Magnum turn counter-clockwise (opposite of pre-Magnums), and while they will bolt on, they will not work properly. Different distributor too.
The blocks are essentially identical. The illustrations are identical regarding the mounting points on the block, though the passenger side mount that bolts to the block is different in some way not mentioned in the FSM. That's one you may have to eyeball. I've never dealt with the V6's, but it looks like a direct carry-over. The most notable difference that comes to mind as far as sensors is that Magnums use crank sensors mounted on the passenger-side at the rear of the engine in a notch in the tranny bellhousing.

Thanks for the information. What illustrations are you talking about?
So are you saying that this will not work?
If that doesn't work could I still swap the 1989 v6 into the 1992 truck?

The illustrations are in the Factory Service Manual that I have. It will work. The biggest change related to the Magnum name is in the heads and intake.

Alex,

There are a lot of nick nack parts that you are going to need to get or make. I've done this before. If I knew what I was getting myself into I probably wouldn't have tried it. And thats 10+ years of motor swapping/rearanging experience talking. If you want to make a mag hybrid, email me and I'll give you a whole list of things to look for, what you need to get, and what you are going to need to make. It's not that hard now that I have it figured out, just going take a little time. Email me if you want to know what I know.
