this has happened twice so far and i am not sure what the problem is. i can turn the key, but not start it and everything works fine, but when i turn it to start it, the votlmeter goes all the way down and it battery is dead. it is cold here so that could be the problem. but, the first time it happened, i got a jump with a jump box. and when i got home i shut down and was able to start up again. but after about another day(this mourning) it died again. i got a jump from my neighbors car, and i could get started, but when i let it idle, it would die. please help me out, because i am not sure of the problem, Steve

Sounds like a bad battery...
A dead cell will cause that..

A bad battery usualy shows up when it gets cold

My origanal batt in my 95 only lasted 3 years and
did the same thing would not start, jump it and
fine unless I let it sit a day than same thing.

Its a real pain when a guy needs to get somewhere
and his truck don't start.

Another way to check you battery is to take a voltmeter with the cell's off and go cell to cell putting the probes directly in the electrolyte. If you have a bad cell, it will certainly show up, cell to cell about 2volts, you may end up with 1 or 2 that read close to zero. All it takes is one cell bad cell to kill a battery. By the way when done with the voltmeter leads run them under water for alittle while to get the acid off.

Another way to check your battery as Tazzy indicated, is to load test it. Put a voltmeter across the battery and crank the engine. The volt meter level will drop in voltage with the load test. I personally prefer a analog meter for this check, because I like to see the needle "kick" under load. If the battery voltage drops below 9.6 volts under load it's time to replace the battery. Here's why:

Fully Charged battery : 13.5 volts x .707=9.5 volts.

The .707 value defines the half power point on your battery in terms of voltage under load.

Another thing to remember as the temperature drops so does battery efficiency. A fully charged battery at 70 degress drops to about 60% efficiency below 32 degrees. The colder it is the less efficent your battery is.

well thanks guys, i got a new battery today. it didnt want to idle without stalling, but i few fishtails in the snow and a few road miles convinced it to stay running until i turn it off. by the way, if you guys want a really sweet key, there is a guy on ebay selling butterfly keys(like the knives, but it is a key instead). thanks, Steve
