 Subject: grinding noise

I have a 98 3.9 and when i take it around left hand turns it makes a whining noise and grinding noise but as soon as i turn right it stops. I was wondering if anybody knew what might be making it do that? thanks

90% chance it is a bad ball joint, but could be a wheel bearing also. How many miles are on your truck? Have you had the ball joints replaced yet? I've replaced all of my ball joints with Moog greasable joints. If you need part numbers let me know.

My truck has a little over 50,000 miles on it... if you would could you give the the part #s for those bearing and ball joints just incase

The numbers are MOOG Part#K7242 for uppers and MOOG Part#7267 for lowers. Unfortunately you cannot just replace the wheel bearings. You have to replace the entire hub assembly. Autozone carries those. Part numbers depend on whether or not you have ABS. More than likely it is the ball joint though. If you plan on changing them yourself, you'll need to grind off the rivets on the existing upper control arm bracket. The new upper comes with bolts to use instead of rivets. The lower one is a real pain and requires a torch to heat up the exisiting ball joint and smack it out. You'll need to heat up the new joint as well to "slide" it in. Hope this helps.

I just had a similiar problem the problem was grumbling above 20mph, but it was carrier bearings. Had the open rear end removed and replaced with Dana posi, new 3.55's and all new bearings including wheel bearings. My guess is it's the wheel bearings. Those can make that whining on left and right hand turns

I have a 99 dakota is the grinding in the steering or in the drive train... Next question... do you have a limited slip diff.. if you do it might be that. mine sounded like the rear was going to explode. i took it apart to replace a wheel seal and found some of the limited slip clutchs are broke now it makes a poping noise. but if its just grinding a little i wouldnt worry about it, just turn the radio up
