I don't know much about engines but when I open the hood with the 3.9 Magnum running in my 92 Dakota, you hear a clicking/ticking noise. I know it is coming from under the valve covers. Is the valvetrain in the 3.9 supposed to make this sound, is it normal? Could I have low oil pressure? A friend told me it was normal of that motor, but I don't know how experienced he is. Oh and if I were to have low oil pressure wouldn't a light on the dash come on "check oil"?

someone else can probably help you more then I, but it could be that your rocker arms need tightened. Don't quote me though.

My 99 V6 CC makes a ticking/taping noise also. It is really noticable on a cold startup and when accelerating. I have heard it is just the chrysler tick. I don't know.

I traced my ticking/clicking to the fuel injectors... Maybe coming from same area on yours as well and just don't reallize it of course it could also be that you need to have your rocker arm "tension or tightness" adjusted...

Don't know why it would be called Chrysler "tick", because I've seen more newer 5 to 10000 mile Fords do this than any other vehicle and it is the fuel injectors on them as well...

I noticed after way overdosing fuel cleaner "3 things of Chevron Techron (30 gallons) and about 3 doses of Marvel Mystery (30 gallons)" nearly all ticking has now gone from my truck, even on cold mornings... I know the 60 gallon treatment is a bit much for one tank, but Marvel cleans and lubes along with Chevrons Techron cleaning abilities, so I shouldn't have any top cylinder lube loss or lube loss in general while using the Marvel... But this has nearly gotten rid of all ticking, so you might try by cleaning fuel system first and see what happens...

i have about the same clicking noise - I narrowed mine down to the #4 cylinder - I think the lifters are ticking - seems to get much quieter after engine warms up - might try replacing the lifters -
there are other posts about the lifters too -

I also notice clicking in my truck...i have found that my passenger side ticks..its not my fuel injectors because i cleaned them...if the click is on the driver side and it only does it right when u start it and when its cold, you might want to check your pcv valve. I had a problem with mine and it made a horrible ticking sound when it was cold.

Sounds like rocker arms when they engage the pushrods. Not a big deal at all, allot of people say its valves and that higher octane helps that, so try high octane(if you can afford it) or fuel injector cleaner, gas treatment type stuff. I would say it goes away then its nothing to worry about, unless you can't live with the sound your going to have to spend money on the high octane gas.

some pcv's are like that i have replaced mine a couple times and they make the same sound on a cold start don't fret about it its just normal....you will know if it is the pcv if you pull it off when the engine is running and you should notice a change in sound and less clicking

My 2004 Dakota v6 just started clicking. I thought that it might be a lifter as it goes with the rpm of the motor. Yesterday i started looking under the hood to diagnose the problem. The sound is on the passenger side of the engine and is high up on the motor. This eliminates any lifter noise or lower end problems. I am going to pursue the fuel injectors and see if I can pinpoint the problem. If it is an injector I will change that.I will repost to let you know how I make out.

Take a look at the exhaust manifold bolts. You'll probably find one missing/broken.

My '94 3.9 V-6 clicked and I endured it for some time, then happened upon the tech bulletin that fixes it. It requires the replacement of your valvee chain and addition of a tensor, about $450 if done by a good shop, not Dodge. Or you could buy the kit from Dodge parts and install it yourself. Should be able to do this without pulling the radiator.

Good luck, Don C

My 95 club cab auto 4x4 3.9s timing chain has been rattleing since I bought the truck in 2002 @ 114,000. It now has 170,000 and is still rattleing about the same I figure Ill just drive it till it quits running and then decide if I should fix it or part it. This is one tough little truck as I have worked the guts out of it on the farm doing jobs that a 3/4 ton trk should do, Like pulling grain wagons of corn so heavy that I had to use 4low just to get moving and overloading the box till the tailgate almost drags the ground and it still runs good with no problems except egr valve and AC commpressor and reg maintance. Oh ya I forgot to mention its slow!!!

I forgot to say I also use this truck to plow snow every winter. I use a 6 1/2 ft western blade and add about 1000 pounds of tractor weights to box. It gets amazing traction and the trany still works great.

Do you guys know pushrod engines? Its
lifter noise, try an engine oil flush and
use a good oil to try to reduce, but
motors will run 100's of thousands of
miles with that noise, just use a good oil
and a hi flow oil filter, or just get over it,
its a mf-ing truck.
