I was fumbling around an MSD catalog and came across a late model coil for Dodges....was rated at 35,000 Volts. Any clue what the stock coil puts out?
Steven...a while back i saw a post of yours referring to Castrol Syntec, and Mobil 1 being level 3 hydrocracks...while this isnt total greek to me, i dont fully understand the differences between this, and POA oils such as the extended drain Amsoil. Where can i find full literature on this? Ive been running Mobil 1 with a Wix filter for the last 10,000 miles (changing every 4, jus cause i think it should be)
About the truck 00Dak 3.9 NAPA brass cap n rotor, 3924's gapped 5 thou over,MSD8.5's Gibson Cat-Back, K&N drop in, MSD,K&N and Gibson stickers on rear window(lol)
seriously...about the coil, and fluids, any help would be appreciated

I am running a SS Blaster at 40,000 volts
If you are running the reg 3923 stay with the reg
gap, if you have the AP's than go .005 bigger.
If you put a MSD 6a and MSD coil open them up to
.060 on the AP's .050 on the reg plugs

Castrol Syntec NOT a REAL synthetic ... it is a Group III hydrocracked conventional petroleum (dino) oil with some Group IV synthetic blended in. The Castrol is a "PRETEND" synthetic.
Conversely, Mobil1 IS a TRUE synthetic. Only oils manufactured with Group IV and Group V base oils are TRUE Synthetics. Group IV is the PAO's and Group V is the Esters.

Synthetic vs. "Dino" ...
Synthetic Lubricants are fuel efficient, extended life lubricants manufactured and formulated from select basestocks and special purpose additives. In contrast to petroleum oils which are pumped from the earth and refined, synthetics are custom-designed in the laboratory. The properties of mineral oils (conventional petroleum - or "dino") tend to vary due to inconsistencies in the crude from which they are obtained. The properties and performance features of synthetics on the other hand, are very predictable due to their molecular uniformity, ... creating the ideal lubricant.
Since their inception, manufacturers of Synthetic Motor Oils have sought to educate the public about the facts regarding synthetics, and the need for consumers to make their lubrication purchasing decisions based on quality rather than price.
Though it sounds too good to be true, synthetics do reduce engine wear, improve gas mileage and increase horsepower. This is because synthetic oil molecules are superior in a number of ways to mineral-based oils.
- higher resistance to heat (up to 600 deg. F)
- Added lubricity (uniform diameter of synthetic oil polymers allows them to more easily slide over one another. The resultant reduction in friction shows up as more horsepower and torque and reduced internal engine wear)
- Higher film strength (one of the major benefits of synthetics, since film strength is what keeps oil molecules from being pushed away from each other under pressure)
- better "pour points", "flash points", "fire points"
- "high temperature and high sheer viscosity
- and so on and so forth .....
Bottom Line ... Everyone should be using Synthetic Lubricants (except perhaps Grandma who only drives to Church on Sunday's). However, the question of "which" synthetic manufacturer is up to you.

| Why Synthetics Work Better - Amsoil Synthetic Oil IP: Logged
Message:
For those of you new to this site and not the regulars:
Why Synthetics Work Better
In plain English, synthetic lubricants are designed to handle temperature extremes, especially heat. They reduce frictional heat and transfer heat away from critical components faster. They also resist heat breakdown much better than conventional petroleum-based (dino) lubricants. In scientific terms, synthetic lubes have higher lubricity and higher thermal conductivity.
Conventional lubricants (often referred to as "Dino", short for dinosaur) rely mainly on additives for their performance. Their petroleum base fluids are physically separated from crude oil during refining. Petroleum base fluids contain impurities of varying types and amounts (wax crystals and sulfur compounds, etc.). These impurities make the lubricant less stable, providing molecular "targets" where heat and chemical contaminants can "attack".
-----
What ARE Synthetic Lubricants?
Synthetic fluids are manufactured, ... built "from the molecules up" from simpler organic compounds. This synthesis process gives Synthetic Lubricants pre-determined physical and chemical properties. Thermal and oxidative stability increases oil life, reduces deposits, and controls oil thickening. High lubricity reduces heat and prevents wear. The performance characteristics of synthetic lubes are based on their tailor-made molecular structure. Synthetic oils use additives to enhance performance, rather than make up for the limitations of petroleum "dino" base fluids.
The synthetic chemistry means less friction, more efficient operation, and a decrease in lubricant temperatures. This translates into better fuel economy and increased power, reduced maintenance, improved reliability, and longer-lasting engines, transmissions, differentials, etc.

Scotty,
I am adding this post from a remote location --- traveling across Texas this week --- working to fund a few oil and gas deals --- in the Barnett Shale area. For all you Texans ... I'll be at the Petroleum Club in Downtown Dallas tomorrow having lunch.
Once I get back to my office Saturday, I will try and find you links to the information.
Most of the information comes from reading Lubes-n-Greases Industry Magazine ... one of the oil industries leading publications, and Amsoil Action News, also a monthly magazine, plus years of studying the industry in general.
The above posts were mostly off the top of my head.

Message: Thanks Diane....but the particular information i'm looking for isnt on Amsoils corp site, not that i've been able to find anyway. What i'm looking for is the break-outs of who is using what grade base stocks, and some tech info on what hydrocracking is. silly little me, I like the oddball info that will only serve to confuse me, but i like to know it anyway.

How else do you learn, right?
Did you try a search. Steven has had a lot of posts in answers to his products. I have seen quite a few over just the last month. Who knows, you might turn something more up.
