I reciently bought a 92 dakota sport with an A500 b/c my 91 440 Dak doesn't understand that gas costs money. I can't seem to figure out what is causing this problem, but the 92 doesn't want to shift into overdrive at all. At 45mph it attempts to shift by constantlly jerking but it remains in 3rd as i speed up. By the time i reach 55 it stops trying to shift and stays in 3rd. I have changed the tranny fluid and filter and and have even added an anti-friction additive. nothing has seemed to work. any advice would be appreciated thanks.

Sorry bud, been down that road. Rebuild. Your O/D tailsection in the tranny is fried.

I Read on TransTec's website that a wire mesh screen snaps into the drain hole on the O/D housing. What this does is slows down the fluid keeping it in the tailsection housing longer & preventing clutch burnout.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. www.phoenixhardparts.com $1050 for waranteed transmission. www.bulkpart.com if you want to attempt the rebuild on your own. $1600 cheapest quote I got from the area shops, $1200 if I took it out myself.

Good Luck,
Shank

Before you tear into the trans a bad trans temp
sensor will cause the truck not to go into O/D

Did it begain to happen as the weather got colder

In the trans cooling line near the radiator 2
wire plug

$6 to $10 for a new temp sensor I would try that
before dropping a grand

I would bet that Shank is right, My 91 was the same way, only worse, lol, and when i tore that thing apart... whew. heh.

My reverse was out, and it would hardly shift past first, when it did, it made the worst grinding/rubbing sound... it was more than fried... heh but it was all in good fun rebuilding it.

I have never rebuilt a transmission before but have always wanted to learn how. I've got a 46RH OD w/lock-up in my 95 dak if it matters. are there any good manuals that show ya how to do it?

I'm a pretty accomplished tech, I can rebuild engines all day long but I've never learned how to do transmissions.

Any sites that show necessary tools for a rebuild?

Geoff

Just have yourself about a 4X8 space and take it
apart and lay everything out in order.

What you will be replacing is clutch packs be sure
you count them the rebuild kits come with extra
plates for diff trannies.

A bunch of rings and clips.

The most important thing is

Keep it CLEAN CLEAN and take your time they are
not bad at all to rebuild

You do not need any special tools to do a mopar
trans unlike ford or gm

I got my rebuild manual @ www.bulkpart.com, best $12 I've spent on my tranny so far! It's a step-by-step tear down & rebuild manual and each one is tranny specific. I found out that whenever I rebuilt it without the manual and put it back together I jammed the govenor. Unless you got shop access, I wouldn't attempt rebuilding yourself... You need a Press to get the O/D Shaft back into the O/D Housing & it's a PIA! I ended up taking it to a tranny shop and told the guy I was a Dumbass & he let me off easy, Only cost me $40 for him to press it back together.

Last weekend I Installed the TransGo Reprogram Kit, I learned that in order for the O/D to engage the Computer reads 4 sensors. 1) Speed Sensor, must be traveling @ least 25mph, 2) Engine Temp sensor, must be @ least 65Deg, 3) Distributor Pick-up sensor, I have no idea why, 4) O/D switch on the dash.

I've been in & out of my tranny 3 times & could not figure out for the life of me why it wouldn't engage into O/D. Now it's making more sense. I had a feeling the O/D Solenoid was not engaging, the Tranny guy told me to test them while I had it off, Both worked fine. Then he told me to try a Jumper wire to test for signal. I ran a Jumper wire from the O/D Solenoid wire into the Cab, Whenever I got to about 55, I grounded out the wire which engages the O/D solenoid & it worked! 1st time I've had O/D in almost 4 months!

The computer is not sending a signal for the tranny to shift. I remember a while back I switched the speed sensor whenever the govenor was jammed & the O/D button on the dash sounds like It's got loose parts in it. My 1st 2 places to start!

Have your truck tested before you start ripping into it like I did, it will save you a couple ulcers, many headaches & several busted knuckles!

Have them test the Govenor pressure (small bolt about 3" above the rear tranny cooler connection) It will be 0lbs @ idle & 1psi/mph. And check the speed sensor.

Even after 3 times the best I could take out & replace the tranny was 10 hrs! (4x4 w/skid plates)

If you want info on the Jumper wire test e-mail me (click my profile)

Good Luck,
Shank

I'm not really having any problems with my transmission, I'm just anticipating them. The last two years the longest I've had a trans is six months. Most of the shops don't want anything to do with my truck (damn kids with mildly built small blocks in their trucks!)

The best shop in the area charged me 1500 for a rebuild and it went out at six months and again at 12. Talked my way into another warranty rebuild but I know its gonna happen again. For some reason my bands keep burning up. Every time he pulls it apart the clutches look almost new but the low gear band was worn down to the metal. Once it even melted to the drum.

any ideas why that would hapen? Its only seen the track once (before I bought the 46-rh) and I'm scared to go back because I'm sure it'll go out.

I'm a college student so I haven't got the cash to keep paying other people to redo it for me. I can however take a weekend off of work to do it myself.

Thanks for the advice guys
Geoff

Burning up the bands sounds like either improper adjustment or Warped drum. If it got hot enough to melt together, i'm pretty sure it's toasted. The front band should be tightened to "snug" and then backed off 1 3/4 to 2 1/2 turns and then locked down tight. How much the bands are compressed during operation is controlled by the govenor pressure.

Does your truck shift firmly into gear or is it nice and smooth? Firm shifts extend tranny life, smooth shifts destroys the guts. You may want to look into a Shift Kit. Transgo Shift Kit JR is $20 @ www.bulkpart.com and you can do the mod's to the valve body with only limited experience.

it was a built up transmission. He said he put in high performance clutches and bands. When the trans was new it would chirp them going into 2nd pretty easily. and 3rd if it was floored so you could say it shifted 'firmly'

the 42-rh even had a semi manual valve body but I opted not to do that in the 46rh because he wanted another 150 bucks. now I realize I should have done it.

Im working on a 46RH and I am having trouble getting the rear band seated in the adjusting lver. It seems too tight even though I have not replaced any of the hard parts in this area. I have a ASTG manual but it does not illustrate this instillation process. Also in the disassembly of this transmission a 3/16 steel ball fell out of somewhere after the valve body was removed. I may be in over my head as the last tranny I rebuilt was a Turbo 350. Any help would be nice. Mike
