well, doing the timing chain on a 96 3.9, and wihle the timing marks are lined up on the cam and crank, and cylinder #1 is at top dead center, the rotor on the distributor is pointing towards #4. we cant get it all to line up.

if we line up the sprockets, itll fire the wrong cylinder.. if we turn the cam so the rotor is firing #1, then the cam might be way off..

what is going on here?

when you install the chain and gears you need to check the rotor button to see that its pointing at #1,then replace the timing chain cover and harmonic balancer to see that the line on the balancer is pointed at 0 degrees on the timing tab.

if these things are lined up then its correct.

The key on the crank is also your TDC mark just
hold the cover up and line it up,

sounds like you were not on compresion stroke
when you took it apart 180 of or 1 full turn
on the crank.

You should always check that the rotor is at 1
you can put it togather 180 out but you will need
to pull the dist and turn 180 and put back in.

If you put it togathe the same way it will run
you just were not on compresion stroke just be
sure the sproket marks are lined right you can
always turn the dist 180

Here let me explain that a little better so you
don't get into troubble here.

Put your chain on exactly like you have it and
than rotate the crank 1 turn only with the chain
on so you don't bend any valves.

Screw the cam bolt in finger tight so the sproket
don't fall off while rotating.

Your fine as long as you do not pull the dist
out you will be fine the dist is timed to the cam
all you need to do is time the crank it will work
either way as long as you do this

Now look crank on TDC and the rotor is now
pointing at #1

Mark on crank sproket on top, mark on cam sproket
on top

You were not on TDC compresion but TDC intake
than the back of the rotor would be at #1 and
the crank mark top and cam mark at bottom of
sproket

Marks togather intake stroke marks both at top
of sprokets compresion stroke.

Be sure you turn it over a few times and every
time the crank is at TDC the marks should line
up. the crank turns twice to turn the cam once
2 to 1 ratio

marks togather, marks both at top of sprokets
