I lost oil pressure. Haven't tore into it yet, but am thinking it is a spun main rod bearing, maybe oil pump, won't really know yet. Wondering on an average what does it cost to rebuild the V6 or get a lomileage V8 for $700? I have an old carbeurated chevy 305 do they make some kind of conersion kit to the 42r tranny?

does the motor knock or can you hear the lifters
ticking[sounds like a bunch of clocks ticking]??

if not,try oil sending unit[there noted for this no oil pressure] $20

also the pump, plugged pick-up,broken oil pump drive shaft

a couple hours work pull the oil pan,the pump and pick-up are there. $30 pump, clean pick-up,new pan gasket.

you can check the shaft when the pan is off

$50-75 this route $200 if you replace crank
and bearings

$300 plus to rebuilt [yourself]

$1000 rebuilt[bought or have done]plus remove and install

if you need a motor and are interested i have a 89 3.9 with 98,000mi runs good, $175 + shipping
you,ll need to put your heads and intake on.

i,m in maine.

good luck

you could always hear the lifters, i thought dodge was natorious for that. The noise i hear is more in the bottom of the motor, metal on metal like. Hell my wife and i just seperated last night i have no job currently besides tobacco, and have 2 kids dumped on me. Any information on the cheapest possible fix, and it be right is what i'm loooking for. Would love to put a V8 in it because it only gets about 12 miles to the gallon. 4WD V6 SLT reg cab short bed

I'm having the same problem. Clanking, loose feeling in bottom end, and lifters ticking. The ticking goes away after awhile, but the oil pressure is low. It's not my oil pump, because I replaced it about 8-months ago.
I found a place on the net with motors that have a 7-year/70,000 mile warranty. The 3.9 is $1389.00.(plus shipping and core)

http://www.rebuilt-auto-engines.com/

Do you know anything about these guys? I think they are part of Crate motors.

Vern, will my '96 heads work on your '89? How much to ship to Al.?
Take care,
Davido.

I hope you didn't let it get low on oil. Clicky lifter noise can be a sign of an enfine being low on oil.

my son and i put 92 3.9 mag heads on a 88 3.9
and put it in his 92 dak 4x4 2yrs ago and he,s
still running the truck with that motor.

so to answer your question-yes

i don,t know what the shipping is to AL.

if i was to guess,$150-250,i can check if your interested,i,ll need your zip.

i,ll sell you a complete truck 89 or 87 dak 4x4 for less $ then you can buy the rebuilt for.

i thought i,d just throw that in,but not with a 7yr warranty.

88 Dakotas were equipped with an atomic clock which uses a satellite somewhere in Utah to set the time... drive it for a while and it'll set itself.
