Subject: Backfiring when accelerating IP: Logged
Message: I just wanted to run this by people before I take my truck to the shop. My ’93 Dakota (V6, manual transmission) is backfiring when I try to accelerate. It is fine when I just sit and rev the engine, but if I have the transmission engaged and try to accelerate more that at just a crawl, it starts to sputter and backfire. Once I it get up to speed, it is fine and does not backfire. I did the key trick and go the codes of 12, 32, 55. The various sources for error codes on the board here seem to point to the Erg valve or a vacuum pressure problem I think.
As a little history on this problem, it only started happening recently during some colder weather here in Iowa. I first thought it may have been a “bad gas” issue (moisture, etc) so I ran thought that tank of gas and have refilled the tank a couple times now with a “known good” gas and with different octanes of gas (2 tanks at 89 octane and 2 tanks at 87 octane) and I am still having the same issue. That is when I checked the codes and started doing research on this board. As a side note, I know I need a new exhaust system soon (it is long overdue in fact, I have just not gotten around to it).
Any thoughts or things I can check in my driveway? Fixing it myself is always cheaper that taking it into the shop to have it looked at.

Message: I had the same problem with my 97...It was terible. I swapped out a few parts, but I believe the main reason for it backfiring was the wire, not the plug, the wire that plugged into the coil was coming loose.
My truck would backfire, choke and die, I would have to pull over and wiggle the wire to the coil, tape it to hell so it could stay in place, and it would work fine.

Message: John, what year, how many miles, any mods & when was last service? There's a list starting with Distributor pick-up, timing, cracked cap, burned rotor button, burned contacts, crank sensor dirty, bad plug wires, crud on valves, burnt valves, list goes on & on.
Check 1st for a cracked distributor cap, will look like a pencil lead drawing, usually on inside from 1 contact to another.
Good Luck,
Shank
