Subject: Distorted oil filter/ leaking
IP: Logged

Message:
My 1994 dakota 3.9 just started leaking oil from the oil filter gasket. Upon further inspection the oil filter was distortred due to pressure. I was told that an oil pressure regulating valve will cause this. But when trying to get the part from the auto parts store or looking it up online i only get oil pressure switch/sending. My question is , Is this the part i need to change? Any advise would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Dave

Yes i'm sure. This just started Happening after about 2500 miles after previous oil change. Also when i first went under the truck to determine where it was leaking from, it looked as if it could have been the pan gasket. Unsure i brought it to a oil lube place to get a better look. And determined it was the oil filter Gasket. So i had the oil/ filter changed while i was there ( and inspected the gasket on the old filter). Thats when we noticed the oil filter bulging. When i got home it was not leaking. But the next day there was oil under the truck and the filter was bulging again.

The oil pressure regulator is integral to the oil pump. That means if you're going to all the trouble of changing the pressure regulator, you may as well change out the whole pump with a high volume unit.

i assume your oil pressure gauge is on the max. Do you how pressure it takes to bulge out a filter. You'll blow out the seals first.

The pressure gauge is between middle and high. Which i find strange. But i have no idea what else could cause this problem.I was hoping someone here could positively I.D the problem.I did a search and found an article that talked about the problem of distorted oil filters and it said the oil pressure valve is the cause. If i can find it i will post the link.

Wow, 1st time i've heard of that 1. sounds like you've got serious issues!
Take spillers advice & change your Oil Pump. It's only about $40 & a bunch of messy wrench turning.

Good Luck,
Shank
