Subject: timing chain - J&J

Hey Larry, I did the timing chain install. I added a Cloyes Street True Roller and did the cam indexing. Good thing to, the cam was 3.5 degrees retarded. The Cloyes comes with a crank gear that has setting for advanced, OEM and retarded. As it was on the OEM setting I changed it to the advanced and the cam came in to withing .5 degrees of right on.

I was doing the heads at the same time. The intake and exhaust ports were matched up as well as the ones on the intake manifold and JBA headers. Man what a difference, the ports are bigger now! Also the valves had a three angle valve job and the bowls were opened up some. I found that the stock valve springs go into coil bind at about .500 lift and with the 1.7 ratio rockers being about .480 lift I was not willing to risk damage. I purchased some Mopar performance valve springs (spring with damper) good to .540 lift. These springs are not conical so you need new retainers, had to buy those. Also found, thanks to Dodge, a push rod that had been wearing on the head due to some flashing that was left from casting. The push rod was worn pretty good, why it had not broken I don't know. I took the porting tool and clean up both heads to prevent any more problems.

Added a Hughes aluminium plenium plate and installed it. These are beefy as compared to the stock one. Also as it is aluminium, it expands and contracts at the same rate as the intake manifold. No leaks, hopefully.

Next was the crank sensor mod, pretty easy with the heads off! Put in new fiveomotorsports 19lb injectors to help out with better fuel atomization.

And after all that it ran! First try! Need to get some miles on it to get the computer to learn about all of the new items.

PS: may need a new upstream O2 sensor, it seems to respond slowly.

Thanks again for the step-by-step guide, it worked well.

It will take a few hundred miles and it will start
to run better.

Once you do more mods it seams to take a little
longer because you are so far off from stock table
the computer needs to do a lot of learning.

I hope you checked your injector sync start out
at 0 to the + side and let it learn.

Yes I did check it, thanks for asking.

It was at like +2 when we checked it so I decided to leave well enough alone and leave it there.

Just waiting for the miles to be put on!

Happy New Year Larry!

The cloyes is +-4 crank cam +- 2

Advancing a cam will give you more low end power

If your running stock the stock chain and gears
will work fine but use the tensioner with all
chains with the V6

When the blocks were machined the cam sits lower
and there will be slop even with a new chain you
need to use the tensioner to solv this prob

I had 30,000 miles on a stock chain with the
tensioner and there was no slop or ware on the
tensioner block some tough stuff so I just added
the cloyes double roller and gears to this motor
when I changed the cam
