Subject: 4x4 Problem

I have a '89 4x4, 3.9L, auto Dakota with about 135K on it. It runs great and has given me no serious problems so far. A minor problem that is (I hope) more annoying than anything is that I have to hold it in 4 high in order for it to stay there. If I don't hold it, it pops out and goes back to 2-wheel drive. When it pops out it is silent and the lever moves forward just slightly. Why is it doing this? Is there a way to fix this? How much money will it cost me?

try adjusting the shifter-put the transfer in neutral and adjust the rod so the shifter is in neutral in the gate-when you get it adjusted try
shifting it thru its gears.

sounds like its out of adjustment

The Shifter Lever Is Mounted In Rubber With A Metal Sleave That The Bolt Goes Through. The Bolt Has Rusted Inside The Sleave. Remove The Bolt And Clean It Up On A Wire Wheel(Be Sure You Wear Safty Glasses) Then Coat The Bolt With Never Sieze And Reinstall. This Is The Same Problem My 96 cc 4x4 Had And It Fixed The Problem. Hope This Helped
