I'd be asking myself why the lifters are shot, if indeed that is the case. Did the previous "owner" (sounds like a lease vehicle) ever change the oil or even check the level? If the answer is no then your oil pump could be shot too.

Lifters don't just fail. The #1 cause is oil starvation and/or contamination. If the dealer just replaces the lifters without fixing the cause of the problem, the new ones could just fail in a few months or so.

Just my $0.02 worth.

Not sure about trucks, but my neighbor is a manager at a car dealership...he says Chrysler vans with the 3.8L engine are terrible for noisy lifters. Usually it's dirt in the lifter. My dad leased our van brand new and has changed the oil every 3000 miles. Never missed an oil change and his lifters are shot. Whenever it sits for a while, the lifters are loud as hell when he starts it up. If it's been driven, they're fine. He took it in and the dealership first said nothing was wrong... so my dad left the van there so it'd sit and then went back with the service dude and showed him. Of course, the lifters were noisy and he said they'd try some stuff before doing any major repairs. By the next day he said the lifters were shot and it'd cost $1300 to replace them. So... that's with the 3.8L chrysler engine. Perhaps it's not just a common problem in that engine?

By the way...any of you with good engine experience with engines... if you have any methods to try and fix those lifters (if it is just dirt in em), please let me know. My dad doesn't change the oil every 3000 miles anymore. He's found that if he does it every 1,000 the lifters aren't so bad. Another thing since some people are against the wax stuff in Pennzoil... last I knew that's what he uses in that van (from the Quickie lube place).
