I bought a 99 3.9 from a friend. He never told me that he was having a bit of a problem with it. Cause he tought that he had it fixed. But it just died on me out of no where. The odometer had "no bus" on it. He siad that is was the crank sensor. Would that just cause it to die like that?

Yes it can if the comp receives no signal it don't
know where the crank is and cant set the timming

Replace it they are only around $40, if you get
a replacement from chrysler they have the steel
mount and are very easy to mod to grab 3 to 4
degrees advance,

It helps accros the entire rpm range but you
notice it most at off idle and low end response
and better gas mileage

How can you mod it for the 3 to 4 degree advance. And what exactly will the mod do? Thanks

I just told you what it does here is a site that
tells you how to do it

better low end and gas mileage increase is what
you will notice the most but it helps across the
entire rpm band

Just be sure to remove the ruber grommet from
the hole so the sensor will move over.

http://www.krcperformance.com/newcontent/timing.html

The timing curves on a stock comp are very weak
this will help that prob there are even some who
did the mod with the super chips tunner installed
and it helped even more

Where exactly where is the Crank sensor located. I was going to replace it over the weekend, but I could not find it. Is it in the tranny bell housing or right out side of it?

the crank sensor is in the top of the bell housing right below the left(standing in front of the truck) cylinder head.

So I would be able to reach it easier from the top than the bottom? I will run out there right quick to check.

Man!, when I had my tranny rebuilt, I had that stupid sensor in my hand, but had never heard of that mod before, now I kick myself! Now it's a lot harder to even see it, I hear you should take out the fenderwell to make it easier.

Hello,
My Brother has a 2000 3.9 Dakota with a 5 speed tranny. He had a crank sensor go bad on him and he unknowingly replaced it with one for an automatic tranny. He turned it over and heard a scraping noise. he found out the hard way that the auto T crank sensor was a little longer then the standard tranny one. He got the correct crank sensor and did get it to run but now it throws codes of miss firing on cyl 3 and 4. He suspects that the notches on the flywheel are damaged. He would of dropped the tranny and bellhousing by now, but it has been bitter cold here in the northeast. If someone in the know could tell me if the crank sensor notch ring on the fly wheel is removable or if it is an intergral part of the fly wheel. Any information on this would be appreciated.

Dave

Larry the only sensor that remotely ressembles what you are talking about on my 99' 5speed is in the block... Am I not looking in the right place or something "passenger side"??? The one I see is on top right beside the distributor "which hence to me it's the coolant/engine temp sensor"... Now I do see some wires running down right behind my cylinder head and felt around, but really couldn't tell if something was sticking out or not in the bellhousing... I'm betting that's the one everyone is talking about right???

Would I be better off to wait until after my head shave and retiming before doing this??? Or would you be able to tell it after retiming??? I do have to retime it to begin with don't I if I shave the heads??? I'm clueless here as you can tell :)) I just figured that it would be easier to do with the intake and everything off and out of the way for easy access...

Just did a crank sensor last week on a 99,3.9,4x4

1-jack front left hand side of truck
2-remove right front wheel
3-remove right front fender liner.
it is held in with about 12 plastic pop rivets
Just drill the head of the rivet and knock it off with a wood chisel (or like tool)
4-Look at aft side of engine where transmission attatches (about 1 oclock),remove two allen key head bolts, pull sensor and wires out.Mine was a black plastic "t" shaped assy.
5-Climb on top of your engine (ensure truck is well supported)On the right hand side (looking aft)of the distributor is the conector.
6-Tie strong string around the conector ,after disconecting it,and go down to the fender and pull it out.
7-Tie the string around the conector on your new sensor and pull it up to the distributor.Do up the conector before installing the sensor.
8-Install the sensor,fenderliner ,and tire.

Note:The sensor I got from Chrysler looked different. It had a metal base and was a little different shape. You will have to use shorter bolts or washers to install it.

My dealer and Chrysler were no help telling me if the two sensors were compatable.I checked and they were the same length so I put it in so far so good.

I used plastic "christmas tree" push fastners to reinstall my fender liner.

Sounds hard but its really not.Dealing with Chrysler was much worse.
Good luck!
